I hope that works, but still, there's a HUGE difference between getting example Danny Tenaglia, Dj Vibe, Mark Farina or David Morales. Not the same vibe, music, or crowd. You can't expect people to like all shades of house music. |
Yea this is my point of view on things too... especially since I live in Ottawa, I have to drive 2 hrs to get there and usually I'll devote an entire weekend to an afterhours event in mtl. So if I'm going for an entire weekend, I don't want it to be a wasted weekend on a DJ that isn't my style... plus like he said, the vibe just won't be the same as if it was advertised cause then it's really the crowd who wants to see this booking... gaaahhhh I'm not really a fan of this to be honest, quite skeptical. I'll be so pissed when my favorite bookings come to town only to have me completely miss out due to no fault of my own... :( |

| I heard Danny Torrence....I hope for you guys I'm wrong. |

Danny Torrence is pretty good but if it's him, he will probably be with another DJ...
I wouldn't be surpised if Angel would hit the deck on Sat. since it's the official afterhour openning... |

| This "Saturday Surprise dj" gimmick will seriously piss off legions of clubheads. I'm usually an optimist, but this is really getting me going. The vast majority of Stereoheads I know, like myself, don't go just for the hell of it, without knowing who will spin. I won't travel 6 hours just to play Russian Roulette with my carefully-selected clubnights. I like to play out in my head weeks in advance the whole night - anticipation is half the fun. Knowing in advance who will spin, informs us what type of sound (duh), vibe and crowd should be expected. Roll calls, hyped-up group emails about a favourite dj will now be a thing of the past - at least for Saturdays, which has traditionally been the biggest night for Stereo. If this ill-thought-out marketing scheme persists, I smell a demise à la Sona V.2 may be forthcoming! |

I think specifying the genre with more precision on Saturdays would solve a lot of problems... I mean there is a way you can describe any dj without having to give out who he/she is...
Then you could pull a certain crowd without losing the "surprise DJ" concept and avoid A LOT of disappointments. |

| Is there any confirmation that the "surprise DJ" will be their ongoing Sat night policy, or did someone just mention it as a possibility a few pages back and it snowballed into being accepted as fact? |

As per Stereo's release, on this forum :
"Introducing Stereo’s new Saturday concept, Saturdays at Stereo, we will see its traditional ‘staple’ nights return, all with a mysterious edginess every Saturday of the month! Expect no advertising about this night’s lineup - just come for the classic quality music played by a surprise hi-profile guest Artist. All will be revealed on Stereo’s dance floor…."
Seems pretty much carved in stone to me. Hopefully, this will be a short-lived policy...before alienating too many people. |

Well, if it proves to be a bust - I'm sure Stereo would stop doing it before they ran themselves into the ground trying to force the idea.
Would be neat if they got the guest-DJ to do a 30-min podcast so people would at least have an idea of the style being played that night.
But, people do have a point though - I think it will impact the tourist-factor at Stereo.
I've traveled to Montreal for specific DJs/events before - but I wont do it if I don't know the DJ playing. |

I'm not sure if it was mentioned in this thread but I'm not too worried because if an international DJ is coming to Stereo, we'll find out about it before that night. Most DJ's post their tour dates on their site, and I doubt they will not list it due to the way Stereo wants to promote themselves. Not all of us are going to go weekly, just in hopes to see a good DJ play. Tell us who's playing, and we will come! .... if they're good. :)
Do you guys think DJ's that used to play at Stereo, like Carl Cox, Prydz, will be booked back at Stereo, or do they have deals with the other clubs they've been too while Stereo was getting it's together. Hopefully they didn't wait too long. I'm also thinking about the Trance nights that they used to have, they have a lot of catching up to do with Circus.
It's good to have Stereo back though. |

True. Big name DJ's will still list their tour dates on myspace or their personal websites. DJ agencies will still want to write their DJ tour dates, so people know they can't be booked and to give their artists exposure.
People here on TA and on other forums lurk, stalk and visit these websites often. We usually know about a party before a promoter posts anything.
So if a Saturday has no forum leak, it's very probable that it's a local DJ playing.
And I'm not even talking about personal leaks. I mean, as soon as you know someone in the loop.... |

Looking forward to celebrating the re-opening of Stereo.
Although the Saturday concept is a bit risky it is definitely worth the chance. I doubt Stereo would cheap out big time on the opening of the concept. I don't expect a huge DJ but with lots of talent in NYC that weekend, anything is possible. |
