They can also lose millions, and they generally have highly specialized skills. Risk + scarcity = value.
Pretty much the same as Warren Buffet or other big investors playing the stock market. Less useful to the economy, but that's not how pay scales are determined. |

As quoted from a 2007 national post article on toronto city workers. Not sure what the raise was in this time but at 6% that would bring it up to 28.17 or just over 56k so it would be one boat load of overtime...
Doesn't mean that I really see the need for booth collectors, but this guy had to be working like 70 or 80 hour weeks. |
