Ok I understand that I may have started to get carried away a bit. I realize that these are kind of city workers. But you all have the same opportunity for the same job so it's not right to say that they don't deserve more than you.

If that's not sound--and I mean mothering SOUND--reasoning then I don't know what is.

They don't make more than I do, so it's kind of a moot point. And it's definitely "right" to complain about them being overpaid when their salaries and benefits are coming out of our pockets. I suppose you've never complained about any of your bills being too high or having too many bull fees?

The difference is that the TTC is revenue generating so I see it as a cost of business as opposed to taxpayer money spent or lost...

And I didn't mean that everyone is saying that the collectors make more... Just didn't want to single anyone out...

And as my bills being high??? Yah sure. Bull fees??? Of course. Who doesn't...

But I don't think it's the same circumstance...

The TTC is NOT revenue generating. The farebox only makes up a portion of the cost. Ergo, it is a government service paid by taxpayers.

It's actually exactly the same. If (for example) WestJet started charging 30% higher rates than Air Canada for the same destination and same (or worse) quality of service, would you voluntarily pay more to fly with them, especially if you knew that it was because they paid their employees more than any other airline, for no particular reason?

Same with the TTC, except it's not voluntary. Whether you ride or not, you still have to pay. You have to pay extra if you do ride, if you want to call that "revenue generating", but they are still being heavily subsidized by taxpayer funds. They do not have a closed financial model and really cannot even stick to a budget.

It's even more insulting when you're told that if you choose an alternative means of transportation (i.e. owning a car) that's more financially efficient, you will be taxed even higher as a disincentive to do so, and in order to further subsidize the wasteful TTC.

Are you guys telling me that the TTC doesn't make any profit at all???

Does anyone have numbers???
miketg23
the ttc is funded by the city of toronto, and therefore not making any profit. Unlike the LCBO which is run by the province.

VDub
Yup looks like they suck with money...

So fire all of the "overpaid" employees...

Close the Sheppard line while you're at it... I think that was more of a waste than anything...

Let's take metro passes away too...

What else??

Oh right Jay... Kill the streetcars...

Wasn't this thread originally about some dude stealing money???
Jayx1
Get rid of the streetcars

automate the fares

break the union..

Then maybe we can actually afford a subway network like what we should have!
