Does anyone have numbers??? |
When I wokred for the TTC as a student way back when one of my colleague's father was a TTC 'higher up". I remember him saying one night that the TTC purposely runs at a loss because if they did make a profit it would reduce the level of public funding they would receive. This is why you'll see 3 TTC employees change a light bulb. Streamlining and effeciency is not in their best interests. |

same goes for all things government funded. When there is no accountability to a bottom line, then nobody cares. This is why socialism/comminism failed in europe and why its starting to fail here.
Humans by nature need incentives. No incentives, no action. Even the most altruistic person is driven by the incentive to feel good about what they are doing. |

Yeah ok dude, let's worry about the fumes AFTER we have a transit system that can actually get people from point A to point B without screwing up traffic and/or hemorrhaging money in the process.
Even if any of us gave a steaming about the environmental impact, and even if the pollution from 300 buses would make any difference in a city that already has thousands of buses and hundreds of thousands of cars, you've failed to consider the amount of pollution created by drivers idling because the streetcar has stopped traffic. And don't try to tell us that buses are the same, because buses pull over on the right side and allow other drivers to pass when passengers are boarding or leaving; streetcars stop on the left and you are not allowed to pass them on the right side for obvious reasons.
Dedicated lanes may solve that problem, but they are only if the roads are widened so as not to further limit other traffic, and a project like that costs WAY more money than just ripping them out and putting in some buses.
Fail. |

unfortuently, 300 buses would only cover a small portion of the streetcar system as the capacity of a bus is smaller than a streetcar. especially the new ones we're getting.
in regards to trolleybuses, you can thank the deteriorating infrustructure and budget cuts because of the provincial gov't at the time.
interesting little tidbit of info. there are still some poles left on lakeshore where the wire used to hang (6 bay route).

| the thing about transit in other countries... they rebuild and buy new ones instead of just outright replacements every 15 to 20 years. Which is one reason they can afford to have so many routes. We waste money here like no tomorrow! |
