Movies that have ACTUALLY scared the crap out of you? (pg. 2)

Most horror movies to me present a problem with cognitive dissonance. As most are set in fairly realistic construct I can not let the fictitious elements blend with the real elements of the construct and I never can accept anything as happening as real, and hence its never scary to me.
It sucks cause I can't watch shows like Lost or any Hospital drama (not that I'd want to watch either, but even just watching with friends) and not go "This is far too unrealistic, I can not enjoy it."
That and I really do not scare easily. |

I'm leaving out stuff that scared me as a child here.
- Lost Highway: That mystery man is just :nervous:
- Eraserhead: :wtf: :nervous: No better way to describe it, really.
- Uzumaki: Weird and very creepy. And weird.
- Begotten: Almost unwatchable, but if you try it'll with you badly.
- Jacob's Ladder: Trippy and :nervous:
If you think nothing can scare you anymore work your way through this list. And if that still doesn't help, meet ********. |

FEAR. |
Event Horizon did it to me too, although I was sitting alone in the dark at home, watching the show with headphones. I had to turn it off half-way.
When I continued watching it the next day, the second-half wasn't nearly as freaky. I guess it's true that what we imagine is far more frightening than what we actually see. Certainly was the case with Event Horizon, as the first half was all psychological tension, whereas the second-half was basically generic slasher. |

The Mothman Prophecies. |
I saw this at a friend's house a couple of months ago. I wasn't scared by it very much, although it had a nicely unnerving atmosphere. Intrigued by the "Based on a true story" claim I went home in the middle of the night and read up about it on Wikipedia before I went to bed. I then had a night filled with possibly the worst nightmares I've ever had. Wikipedia's version isn't much like the film, but it's the kind of that gets under my skin much more than the supernatural angle of the film.
I'm a big fan of horror movies, but the result is they very rarely scare me. You become immune to the predictable, sign-posted shock moments and the obvious tension building shots.
One of the few films that genuinely made me jump out of my seat was The Thing. It's a masterpiece of horror cinema because John Carpenter creates this incredible tension throughout the film, and yet the shock moments never come when the characters are alone, investigating a darkened corridor. They come when you're least expecting it. |

I'm with you on both points there.
And funnily enough, the last movie that really scared me was Halloween - also a Carpenter film. |
