Might as well say it's possible to have well-crafted and smart gore moments, too. No?

Of course. I said "gore alone isn't scary". I don't see how it's possible to be frightened of gore alone. Gore can be used to heighten the menace of a monster or antagonist, or more commonly to disgust, but on its own it's not going to scare you.

To return to the example of The Thing, there is plenty of gore in that film and it's very effective because it augments the gooey, visceral, disgustingly biological nature of the monster. It fits the "body horror" themes of infection and physical violation that the film uses.

The gore in Event Horizon neither fits the haunted-house-in-space premise or the spooky psychological horror the film is built around. It doesn't work with the film, it's just gore alone. It might be disgusting to some people, but I seriously doubt it scared them.

I think "body horror" is my favorite type of horror film.

I dunno, I thought it worked to some great effect in Event Horizon. The idea that people didn't just disappear or die in between dimensions, but were driven insane and horribly mutilated either by their own doing or by that of their friends, was really kind of jarring. Yeah, by the end of the film, it began to lose its effect because you sort of knew each member of the crew was going to get it worse than the last, but at the heart of it, Event Horizon was a film about science and machinery gone horribly awry - surely you see the symbiosis with flesh here? With gore and penetration?

Personally, the idea of hell as a place of corporeal torture through being impaled on spikes or extreme flagellation is a very dull, almost medieval conception that didn't relate to technology gone awry at all. Perhaps if there'd been a religious aspect that had been played upon it would have been more effective.

Besides, the bulk of the gore scenes are embedded in the narrative incident and practically no one dies because of machine-related accidents. People fall from heights and splatter, they gouge their own eyes out, they are cut up by surgical instruments. I'm not seeing much symbolism.

Yeah, I tried. Event Horizon wasn't perfect. But crap? That's a bit harsh.

A Cronenberg film would prove my point better. But this is apparently about scary movies, not simply horror films. :p
Renzo
Showgirls.

The first time I saw Event Horizon (cimema, aged 17), I was on shrooms.

FEAR.

+1

Especially the part where the eyes get gouged out...

But truly the scariest movie for me was the original

TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE.
