wouldn't you say rurik is the common link for east europeans? he came from scandanivia and established rus'. although eastern europeans don't really look scandanivian but i say that comes from rus' being oppressed by the mongols for a good 200 years...lots of mixing. serbians have turkish blood because of the ottomans. so maybe serbs and russians look similar because the serbs had their own darker skinned oppressors. |
The Slavic tribes existed before Rurik. He was a Varengian who came to rule Kievan Rus somehow. The only written info about him from the primary chronicle suggests he was invited in by the warring tribes (as an independant 3rd party ruler) to rule over Rus and stop the internal bickering that was consuming the various tribes.
Earlier on what was later to become Rus had been a trading port for Varengians for a while and they no doubt added their genes and culture to what would later become Slavic identity. Traditionally Russians are generally pale skinned and blonde-haired (blonde hair is sometimes referred to as Russo-vollosiye in Russian).
If you go to mainland Russia most ethnic Russians will fit the Scandinavian image reasonably well. If you ever come accross a group of children in a RUssian village they almost always seem to be predominantly blonde (Russian peasants: image image ) though sometimes I think I can see some asian influence in prominent cheekbones and eye shape - though that could come from local influences of ancient local non-slavic tribes like the Mari people for example.
I think during the cold war Hollywood occasionally created the image of the dark hairy Russian because it was an image that was easier to vilify... Another source of this misconception is that a lot of the immigrants from Russia are actually Russian Jews, and tend to have darker complections. But in reality this isn't your stereotypical Russian. Most Russians are pale and don't tan easily (like me, unfortunately), have light coloured hair and lighter eye colouring.
Ukrainians tend to be a bit darker. Serbs and Croats darker still, more olive complexions darker eye colours darker hair, more body hair and a generally a bit more Mediterranean looking.. quite different from Russians. |

Add to that the migrations from Centreal/Eastern Asia after the Slavs established themselves roughly where they are nowadays:

And you forgot to mention that both Slavs and Scandinavians are usually tall as hell: I always feel tiny among those guys :p
edit: That's what the Mongol Empire was like at its apex, by the way. | quote: | Originally posted by astroboy

And that can be easily explained by the interaction with neighbouring peoples as well. The constant interaction between them is behind one of the causes behind a very interesting phenomenon in South-East Europe: The Balkan Sprachbund. If all these peoples lived in complete isolation, it would be impossible for their languages to converge the way they have been converging. Naturally, cultural contact does not equal sexual contact... but, let's face it, it takes a really unhealthy dose of xenophobia to completely avoid intercultural bonking :D |
