I'd rather hear the less obvious nominations. Sasha, Massive Attack and Sphongle are blindingly obvious.

If you're looking for the lesser known of the bunch, please take the Lulu Rouge album I linked to in my first reply as my number 1 choice.

You have horrible taste in music.

Now now, Chicane and Mirco de Govia at least are not too shabby. :-P

A few more I've thought of:
Fever Ray - Fever Ray (edm/experimental)
Zeigeist - The Jade Motel (edm) -- this would be a lesser known alternative to simply choosing The Knife's Silent Shout
Atlas Sound - Logos (experimentalish)

That's true.

Those are my most obvious choices for truly influential albums that haven't already been mentioned. I'll have a look at my collection when I get home and come up with some others.

I'm surprised to see you do a thread like this. As you have been so apt to point out, they usually degenerate into a bunch of morons naming their favourite releases rather than what has actually been asked for.

Don't worry about influence. I just want to hear the best. And I know any recommendations thread will become a procession of idiocy, but I can still pick through the sensible responses. Although I expected to put Ted Promo in that second bracket.

boys of summer is by far the greatest summer tune ever made. I envision myself on a patio watching all the half naked guys and bikini chicks playing volleyball with sand on a seashore.

Thanks :p I know that the non-EDM music I'm listening to isn't too popular :p But honestly: I don't care

Honestly: you have horrible taste in music. Not unpopular, horrible.

I'm also doing a similar list (but mostly for myself), and I have around 200 really good albums that are worth repeated listens to choose from. Without mentioning obvious suspects, here are some less known and so far unmentioned choices from the top of my list:

Aglaia - Three Organic Experiences - this is THE ambient album of the 00's for me. Easily combines subtle and static work of Biosphere with attractive and interesting sounds of artists from Ultimae label (mostly Carbon Based Lifeforms). Unfortunately released on a small obscure Italian label, so nobody relly knows about it.

Jazzanova - In Between - highlight of the strong early 00's nu-jazz scene. Smooth vocals, loads of different instruments, great programming, clever use of samples... One of the finest marriages of electronic and traditional music ever. St Germain - Tourist is another excellent suggestion.

Echospace - The Coldest Season - ultra deep and sophisticated dub (techno) album, one of the first ones that overwhelmed and improved Basic Channel's sound.

Monolake - Cinemascope - equally deep and ethereal as The Coldest Season, but even more detailed and complex.

Jon Hopkins - Insides - his first two albums were cheap copy of BoC and some other downtempo artists, but this last one really stands out as an adept clash of chaotic programming and Ae style FX with masterful classical piano arrangements and subtle synth work.

Peter Benisch - Soundtrack Saga

Oh man, i have completely forgot about Peter Benisch! Yes, the "Soundtrack Saga" was really good but "Waiting For Snow" is brilliant...classic 90s ambient album. But yeah...it is "90s" so it doesn't count lol. Anyway, thanks for reminding me this great artist.

Matryoshka- "Zatracenie" that paulandrews mentioned is also very good. It is quite downtempo and orchestral so i'm not sure if it counts...but yeah it is good.

A few more excellent and less known albums are

Arms & Sleepers - "Black Paris 86" (Fantastic trip-hop/ambient/experimental release with a strong organic feel. The new album "Matador" is also good)

Boy Is Fiction - "Boy Is Fiction" (cinematic dark ambient meets shoegaze meets trip-hop meets industrial.)

French Teen Idol- "El Siete Es La Luz" (slowly developing epic electronic/organic compositions. Its a very recent album but it is really good)

and a very personally favorite one

Port-Royal - "Afraid to Dance" (some say that the first one-"Flares" is better but this is the one that stayed with me. The new album "Dying In Time" is also frekingly good but it needs more time to show on such a list heh)

I don't know about "cream of the crop" but these are personal favorites that i've been listening to without getting bored. But this is electronic music in general not EDM in the strict sense.
