Progressive breaks is an extension of breaks. Four entirely different music branches that have absolutely nothing to do with each other, despite sharing the same name.

That has got to be the best definition of progressive I have heard yet.

A small modifier here: most of the time, progressive breaks is basically just progressive house with a breakbeat and consequent bassline.

ok. since trance doesn't exist without house, progressive trance doesn't exist without progressive house. progressive trance is like a poor man's progressive house.

No. At the time, this was hard trance.

aka the mid 90s German Trance sound: fast beats and screaming acid with either piano lines or strings or cathedral choruses. It would morph into Nu-NRG (and then hard dance, along with uk hard house and hardstyle) a few years later.

ok.

This is probably the most famous progressive trance track:

The is my favorite progressive trance track:

Now off.

decent track. better than the previous you posted.

progressive trance is usually trash, especially from Anjunabeats. there was a member named Neil, and he sucked Anjuna's in the CD Reviews section back in the day.

this is REAL progressive trance right here, I'm pretty sure everyone knows this track already.

you gotta admit I'm an awesome heel. my ability to get others riled up is second to none.

Why?

Trance didn't come from house.

Oh, all of a sudden you're an expert now? Of a genre you insisted didn't exist a few days ago?

Anjunabeats never released any progressive trance. At least, none that I am aware of. It was a euro disney cheese trance label. Progressive trance was pretty much finished by 99, being supplaunted by the bigger, beefier anthem trance and washy dutch supersaws. Hooj was probably the biggest progressive trance label.

Anjunabeats at inception was more melodic and uplifting trance, slightly less "hands up in the air" than the late 90s supersaw dutch variant, but virtually the same family.

You're right that progressive trance as it's labelled today has nothing to do with the progressive trance of the 90s.

WTF? Trance evolved from acid house? Or?

Vector A
Trance evolved from techno. Pretty much.

More techno and ambient, particularly what the Germans called "kosmische musik" ("space music", basically). There had been a musical movement since the 1970s of Germans making extremely hypnotic and spacey tracks. Not only do some of these tracks sound remarkably like early prototypes of trance, but people like Klaus Schulze even called their albums things like "Trancefer" and "En=Trance". Most of the early German trance sounds like kosmische musik with techno beats attached.

It doesn't, but kids today still use the term "progressive" trance to refer to slightly slower, slightly less overblown still candyfloss trance. It infuriates me whenever I click on someone's promo mix advertised as "progressive trance" and get a fistful of supersaws and angelic breakdown stupidity.
