Losing an animal is always hard, and I really feel for you. There's an underlying sadness to owning a pet, because they are like children who need constant care and attention, but you know you'll always outlive them.
My dog is approaching 10 years old and now I live away from home I miss him much more badly than my family, because I know he won't be there for much longer. I'll cry when he dies and some people may find that absurd, but good pets bring so much warmth and love into your life, and anyone who's felt that will understand. I'm just sorry I can't tell you any way to deal with it, because there is no easy way to confront death.

Whoever tells you that crying over a pet that was close to you is 'absurd' clearly has no concept of love. If they told me that, they would have a pretty good understanding of my fist in their face.

I'm just moving on, remembering the good things, how sweet she was. We buried her behind the garage near the barn. It was so hard. :(

My dog Aisha died two years ago, it was pretty hard
Her son, though, is living with my mom's bf, so he visits us pretty often:]]

I can go without seeing friends/family for very long periods of time, but I always miss the dog first. As strange as it may sound, not being able to see her as often is the only thing I makes me feel uneasy about the idea of having to move away for grad school.

Sorry to hear about that.
Pets become a part of the family, it's not lame at all.
I found a kitty back in 1998. She was the best cat ever. While I was in Japan in 2006 I got word that she got outside and never came back. I was destroyed. So if feeling bad for losing a pet is lame, I'm the lamest person in the world. She also had kittens before she was a year old and one of them had really bad health problems and we had to put him down and he was only a year old. Great cats spawn great kittens and he was awesome too. Longest tail you would have ever seen on a cat.:stongue:
Just keep your head up and remember all the good times you've had together and never forget it.

I remember watching this short documentary about a guy and his bond with his dog(the one where the dog is put to sleep). It was really well done and provides insight on how dogs can be as important as a family member. Now, if I could actually find the video...
Losing a pet is not easy. I remember when our dog died, back when I was 16 or 17, and it devastated me. It was a German Shepherd called "Donner" (that's German for "Thunder") and we firmly believe he was poisoned, so it made us even more miserable.
He was the only pet I got attached to. My parents later adopted another dog, a Bichon Frisé named "Kraus" (yeah, that's Frenchie's surname, I know). But when he died, maybe because he was already very sick, I wasn't nearly as sad as in the first time.
