Yes that is very funny. |

Christ, two of the guys I work with came back after lunch talking conspiracy bull yesterday, and we had a huge argument. One of them is a and had lit a huge blunt in his car while out for lunch, but the other guy is really cool and it depressed me that someone who shares a lot of tastes and opinions with me can believe some of this .
The points of interest ranged from the fluoride debate (fluoride apparently being developed by Nazi scientists and is used to control our minds) through 9/11 to the Illumati controlling history and Jay-Z putting Illuminati symbols into his music videos to make us buy certain products.

But yeah, I feel your pain. I had a nasty debate with a friend of mine a couple of days ago because I tried to tell him Americans do not think the Amazon is an international territory under their control:

Bloody nationalist conspiracies... the CT'ers around here firmly believe this is the page of a textbook used in American schools. American cranks are too busy trying to disprove Darwin because it clashes with the bible, you idiots, they don't care about the Amazon! |

Er, as an American, I beg to differ.
If it weren't for the fact that it would piss off Puerto Rico for being under-represented, the Amazon would have its own star on our flag. ;) |

I doubt it. It's like saying Americans see Siberia as their 51th territory because of its rich soil. Can you imagine the cluster- an annexation like that would be? Granted, we don't have nuclear weapons but this is just infeasible.
And you do not study this is in school. Do you? |

You're right.
It was a very passing reference to The Tailor of Panama (I didn't much care for the movie) in which the American Military is depicted as having been frustrated for relinquishing control over the Panama Canal.
Suffice to say there is a distinction to be made between both bodies of water that might fail your average American student. Let's not discuss these deficiencies, here. :stongue:
The purported mythology of your friends' is only valid if some American's confuse the Amazon with the Mississippi. Being that most Americans can't very well find Brazil on a map, it's highly doubtful that they would lay claim to the Amazon. |

I was honestly thinking ", I wish PKC was here right now". It got pretty heated: the spliffed-up guy was telling me to "Read up on it" over and over, but I knew he had absolutely no idea about science or whatever and his idea of "reading up" was to watch idiot Youtube videos, so I told him he knew nothing and was talking bull. So he threatened to hit me. Got pretty heated for a while. |

:haha: definitely woulda helped you bash him!!
they always tell you to "read up on it", because they can't reproduce the information and arguments succinctly enough to convince a 5 year old. and deep inside they know how stupid they sound, so they try and direct you to other, more convincing idiots in order to make their case. the anti intellectualism inherent to the CT just makes me so angry.
so yeah, you should've bashed him. stoners cant fight! |

Usually my reaction is to fake being interested/shocked, say I'll look it up as soon as I get home, and then resolve to never speak to them again. |

| What really grinds my gears is the asymmetrical skeptecism. If the government doesn't carry out all its figures to the 39th decimal point, we're supposed to infer that something is being covered up, but if someone anonymous idiot posts a video on youtube about an alleged conspiracy, now that's a trustworthy source of information. |

| Yeah, it's that circular logic that any source disagreeing with them must be biased/in on it/brainwashed, but any illogical idiot with a webcam is speaking sense because they're opposing authority. |
