Islam has been degrading women for centuries, its just yet another story, nothing new or shocking here. Women are blamed for everything, even if a Muslim man rapes a woman, it was her fault for provoking him to rape her. Thats why women in Islamic countries are forced to wear ridiculous all-body coveralls, to prevent rape, or as they say, as part of their culture.
The I've read about mistreatment of women in some of those countries is so shocking you guys wouldn't believe it. Like seriously, did you guys know that women are NOT ALLOWED to drive a car in Saudi Arabia? Or that nearly two thirds of Egyptian men admit to sexually harrassing or assaulting a woman (or a few)? Thousands of honour killings every year?
Its their countries, their way of life, I am not gonna debate it or force them to change it. But there's just no pretty way to describe it. |

Even though it may be their so called "way of life", I still believe that all humans should be treated equally when it comes down to fundamental human rights. We no longer live in times where ignorance should be tolerated with all the advancement we have made in all aspects of everyday life. |

I think most people in our society would agree with you legendary, that's how we were raised, and how we live here.
The problem is that when you mix a religion and way of life stemmed from hundreds and even thousands of years ago versus todays standards and values, people act idiotic and think it's going to take away from the "purity" of their faith.
Not only that, but oh noo, if you treat women like human beings...what comes next? So they leave it all the same and then think that they are righteous because of "upholding" their beliefs.
Obviously this topic has multiple points that can be argued upon...
My point is...you can worship however you want, but why harm another?
Truth be told, come into the 21st century...treat others how you would like to be treated. The simplest way to live and be a decent human. |

Religion was a way to govern a mostly-uneducated society. Religious laws were designed for the good of the people at the time in which those laws were made.
I grew up Catholic. The Catholic Church says pre-marital sex is a sin... Well guess what? In the times in which that law was made, women got married right after they got their period... ya I would hope having sex with an 11 year-old would be frowned upon.
The Catholic Church says birth control is a sin... well - back in the day, families needed help to take care of the household and children were labourers.
Most Religious laws are simply archaic now in our modern society. To the dismay of religious fundamentalists, to modernize the laws of each religion would lead to the realization that the beliefs that are actually worth clinging to are universal.
But the unintelligent or those incapable of guiding themselves to live a "moral" life need something to cling to I guess.... |

Couldn't have said it better. It's sad really. All the deaths, and wars on the basis of something that should bring you to a higher level of enlightenment. This is not the way.
I've said it before...if more people listened to trance music, felt it, and understood it, I think the world would be a much happier place.

agreed!
I also feel that while the rest of the world has come a long way since stone ages, countries like that have not developed much, socially. The other week there was an article in NP about an underground school for women in one of the Muslim countries - not only the founder himself received dozens and dozens of death threats, the girls themselves have to lie and hide while they attend classes so they can learn how to write and do simple math. It's mind boggling that simple liberties like this, are virtually non-existant for women, just because they are women. I won't even touch on the cover-ups they have to wear to walk on the streets, that's a whole other topic for discussion. |
