But criticism cannot "debunk" a religion. |
No, but it can debunk literal interpretations of obvious nonsense. There are plenty of people in the world who will take this story as some sort of point scored against Godless science or whatever, and while none of those people may be in this thread, that doesn't ban PKC from shaking his head at their stupidity, or at that fact there are funded archaeologists performing this dig.
A lot of people are still religious, but most of them have a much more modern and complex spirituality. I'd argue that those stupid and misguided enough to take this Ark story literally (and quite simplistically) are the evangelists who give religion a bad name. I don't think PKC wants to wipe out religion, but I'm almost certain he wants it to at least be sensible and reasonable. |

yeah, but nutter is right, that's what i was implying. assuming the ark indeed existed though, why couldn't it be the ark do you think? |
Could it be "the ark"? I suppose it could but I view it as improbable for a number of reasons: 1) it seems improbable that if there was a flood it was anything more then a regional event; subsequently, I do not see there being much of a chance the waters could have reached such a height and that the interpretation of the total depth being 15 cubits is more probable then 15 cubits above the tallest mountain. 2) It seems improbable to me that grass lands animals such as cattle (specifically noted as being on "the ark") would survive a 4000m decent down the mountain. 3) the measurements of the rooms given by the group don't fit with the description of same in the bible. 4) This "ministry" is single minded in the purpose of finding Noah's Ark, which they claimed to have found on their last expidition in 2007 and later acknowledged was incorrect... which suggests that there are either a load of really big anchient boats on the side of this mountain or the group is staging "discoveries" in order to promote themselves for some other purpose (donations probably). 5) This group chose Mt. Ararat for their expiditions because they believe Genesis states that's where the ark landed; however, the bible refers to the region of Ararat not that specific mountain; the probability of it being that particular place is low. 6) The bible specifically identifies the type of wood used and sealent applied; one would presume that these would be the first two things the group would confirm and then use as evidence; however, there is no mention of either on their website. Hell, there are too many reasons to list really.
I would suggest that it's probable that if there was a great flood the ark likely did make landfall on the side of a mountain or hill but at a level near 6-7m. At that height the ark would have been easily accessable after the fact. If the ark were the dimentions laid out in the bible (which are very specific) then it would have been easily seen by anyone passing by and presented a very nice source for already milled timbers to be re-used in building projects and fairly quickly canabalized... in fact, if there is any truth to the myth then it is presumable that Noah and his family would have needed to build a settlement, thus would have needed timber the most readily available source of same being the big assed pile of it they left 6m up the hill behind them. I doubt "the ark" will ever be found because it likely no longer exists and probably didn't last much longer then months to years after it was beached. |

Funny thing is, ancient flood myths reverberate around the world, not just in the Middle East. |
