Checking out his album, then coming back here to complain about it when you already know its going to be commercial crap is kinda pointless. Id rather praise Armin for the great music he gave me 1999-2003, and understand that Armin van Buuren, he is a DJ that is there to give the masses what they want.. and thats crappy uplifting "hands in the air" trance music.
He actually checked out MY album on a promo pool and gave it a comment and good rating, he knows exactly what underground trance is, he is just there to please the crowds and does not hide the fact either. Armin i love you and thank you for the good times. :) |
the crowds may want hands in the air vocal anthems (although honestly i really believe 90% of them just want a beat they can gurn to) and he is trying to deliver us this magnificent beast of vocal perfection.
all these guys like armin that are putting out albums that are 70 odd% vocals are all trying to get something in the real charts, not just the dance music or the beatport trance charts but in the real charts just like the old days of '99 when there were things like silence and better off alone were on MTV and the like.
If they can pull of one of these tunes - just one - like pvd did with for an angel or tiesto did by attaching his name to silence - it surely means at least 5 more years at the top without really doing anything else and gain that certain dj immortality that will see them in the dj mag top 10 for life.
so they do produce about 8 of these tracks (the more times you try the more chance of a hit - yeah?) per album. they make ing music videos of themselves looking off into the ing sunset while they wear white polyester and contemplate life as they whistfully bop along to a tune someone wrote for them. Then some girl screatches about not being able to survive like a flower cant without water....
and what does it amount to? crap that sells to no-one but 15 year old e-tards that havent worked out torrents yet...the video gets a few plays on youtube but not much else and its all forgotten about a month later except by the people that took their first pill at their first party and the sad sad fans of real trance who have had a genre reduced to its knees by terrible music that doesnt sell.
i dont accept that. |

Perhaps he meant that if you go to a restaurant that gives you a plate of every time you might want to go to another restaurant instead of complaining (especially seeing how the constant complaining accomplishes absolutely nothing). |

Orbion is ok.
Virtual Friend has some promise to it. The vocals are nice and it actually has some melody and harmonic to it. :) :) :) I want to hear the rest of that. :crazy: :eyespop:
But the rest of it is not that good. Some of the songs actually have some potential (again, see Orbion). I just get this vibe that Gabriel & Dresden decided to let Sean Tyas produce some music from their melodies. |

This pretty much. It is time to ing move on. Don't worry that if one of the big guys does make a decent track, you will come to know about it, but for the time being your time is better spent checking other music out. |

How is it dishonest, exactly? Everyone knows what the album will contain and I doubt Armin is going to deny the content either. You make it sound like he's somehow cheating people into buying his stuff. |

What do you expect him to do ? switch to progressive house or psy trance ?
Armin has made and remixed plenty of vocal tracks in the past, loads of them where really good, its vocal tracks that the masses wants to hear.. its what sells.. and from an artistic standpoint they are also harder to produce, there are more work in a vocal track.
As an artist you want to be HEARD... and that is something i can say for every artist in the world. With instrumentals you can only get so far. And im sure he believes in his own music as well.
He recently did Gaia - Tuvan, which wasnt even under his own name, clearly he has some kind of passion for what he does. Whether we like the music or not. |

its dishonest from an artistic point of view. its not his musical vision.

hard to produce ≠ quality, and i'm sure you know this as a producer. i don't doubt that his main goal is to reach as many people as possible...but is that really worth sacrificing your artistic integrity?
I'm only saying this because i've heard him state in the past that the music he plays is specifically geared towards the crowd, and has nothing to do with his own taste. I know every dj is supposed to feel out the dance floor and give it what it wants based on the timing of the set but to completely eliminate your own distinct touch defeats the purpose.... its like putting a radio up there, and this is reflected in his productions.
don't get me wrong, i'm sure he has a passion for bringing music to the masses, and you can tell hes a really well spoken and stand up guy. I even enjoy a few of his recent productions ('Sail' comes to mind) but I can no longer respect him as an artist...as a promoter and businessman, sure but that's about it. life is far too short to support uninspired music. |
