lol, right deadmau5 isn't big 'at home' in Canada. He's a nobody. Right. Someone that packs Guv, this is London, etc etc is barely recognised. |

| EDM is nowhere near mainstream. The vast majority of regular clubgoers in Toronto have never heard of Footwork, or tech house, or any top DJ other than the obvious. Most "scene" people seem to forget how small it really is. So I say, any mainstream exposure is awesome. More money and attention being brought toward the genre can only push things forward. And progress is good. |

You people are completely missing the point. Deadmau5 does NOT care what trash you talk about him... all of that is what created the publicity and ultimately his global exposure to show people what he IS trying to do. He never was nor will he ever be categorized as a "DJ". His sentiments are very clear: DJ's are a thing of the past and it was a completely different era in the 90's where it was fresh. He has been flamed in the past for his arrogant commentary on the scene and "artists" altogether but all he was trying to convey to people is that he is NOT trying to be another DJ. He wants to manipulate and push the boundaries of technology for the newer generation so that he can be innovative in PRODUCING a live show for people rather than simply getting paid to beat match 2 tracks together for hours on end.
So lets try to understand Joel' prerogative: (Joel please interject as necessary)
1. Deadmau5 is NOT a DJ and does NOT want to be pigeon-holed into this category... ever.
2. Deadmau5 is doing everything he can to push the boundaries of technology while infusing it with an "electronic" sound.
3. Deadmau5 manipulates tracks on the spot at his live shows very much like Paul Kalkbrenner would for live PA's.
4. Deadmau5 is doing everything he can to create a unique experience to inject into what seems like a very stale, repetitive scene which is now approaching its 3rd decade.
5. The visual experience is there to compliment the audible experience instead of the vice versa.
6. Deadmau5 has no intentions of using other peoples music at his live shows since he wants the people to be there for HIS music and
for the Deadmau5 experience as a whole. |
Joel is doing nothing that Daft Punk didn't already do in the 90s. |

progress is good....greater exposure doesn't always mean progress nor does greater exposure mean a better product will be produced. |

That's exactly the thing though... he is far closer to an entertainer at a concert than he is a DJ.

I don't think there is any denying he is an entertainer.
Personally, I cannot call anyone a DJ who does not use vinyl or CDs. I know many people now like to use the term digital jockey for the laptop performers.....but no....just no. |

I've seen some dj's that cant even beat match with their ear and have to focus on the screen and match the beat that way by the visualizer in their dj program

Yep. Although someone who can beatmatch and knows what they're doing but uses a laptop/etc etc shouldn't be looked down upon, as long as their product/dj set, production is quality, I have NO problem with what they're doing. |

I agree they shouldn't be looked down upon but you just can't call them a DJ. I don't see any problem with people using technology to their advantage as being a successful entertainer/DJ takes a lot more then just beat matching. |
