Seriously, Tiesto has about 10 years of solid production behind him. Hate him or not, to many people he IS the kobe of dance music - one of the first DJs to do his own stadium tour, one of the first DJs to break through into the main stream with his music, the list goes on.
The guy charges that much not to play CDs. Just like everytime you see your favorite rock band they aren't expected to play their best improvised guitar and drum solos, Tiesto isn't expected to do something mindblowing. But he is expected to play a good set, some Tiesto classics, have good visuals, etc. And he does.
And yeah, people will pay to see that. I don't see why it's pissing everyone off so much. If it was so easy to mix CDs on stage, why isn't everyone up there right now skimming 250k off of "suckers"? There's gotta be a reason he can charge that much, and I refuse to believe it's solely because people are idiots and pay money to see him just beatmatch some CDs. That's ridiculous.
I didn't say I was mad, I said it was sad. And it is.

For me it's Tiesto, Armin, and Ferry. I'll always give those three the benefit of the doubt no matter what they do. I can't help it.

Yeah, it's just more Wii shovelware. :(
Though I'll be honest, had that come out when I was 16, I'd have bought it in an instant. :P

Basketball players and a lot of athletes in general get paid ridiculous amounts, but someone like Kobe or Tiger Woods IS actually legitimately talented. Basketball players do a lot more work than Tiesto does. He barely even makes his own music. All he has to do is be Tiesto and show up. He's clearly good at something though, and that is making as much money as humanly possible from sitting in front of people and playing back the same pre recorded music for a few hours every couple nights.
I was referring to top basketball players getting paid "crazy" sums of money for doing something they are not skilled at: "designing" a shoe. The players may give their input on colors and some cosmetic features but likely do not get into the nitty gritty of shoe design.

Pretty sure NBA players don't really design their shoes...they have some creative say on the shoe, sure. But for the most part...Nike/Adidas/whoever is doing all the work. The NBA player gets paid a lot of money to wear the shoe and act like it's part of the reason why he averages 25ppg. He's not being paid for his designing skills.

Yeah sure, I agree that is equally ridiculous. It doesn't really make what Tiesto is doing any better. :p

I never said it did. I only was pointing out that star athletes also get tons of cash with endorsement deals for essentially 'showing up.'

29/7/6 is "showing up" huh?

You are missing the point. I am not referring to the money top athletes make from playing their sport (Kobe getting a check from the Lakers), I am talking about the money top athletes get from businesses for only lending their name and 'showing up.' How much 'work' did Kobe do in making his Nike shoe? Probably very little, but he got paid a lot.
The quality of a DJ is not proportional to the amount of money a promoter pays to him/her, yet many people think it should be this way. A $100k performance by Armin, Tiesto, etc... will not be 10x better than a performance by a competant DJ getting paid $10k. It is all about name recognition.

Nine years ago, I paid $5 to see Tiesto at 1015 Folsom on a Sunday. I thought it was $5 wasted. I've never paid to see Tiesto again. But I did see him twice. It was POP after party at Ruby Skye. First time, it was with Ferry. I wished Ferry play all the time. But his performance as a DJ was actually OK. Second time, he only played a few tracks here and there. It was a complete joke, given that the DJs with him played random Vegas garbage.
