| A lot of those luxuries that inmates get are more for the guard's benefit than the inmate's. If the inmates are occupied watching TV or playing ping pong they won't cause trouble or fight. |

We should remember that a criminal only loses a part of his rights, not all of it. Degrading him or treating him like an animal doesn't make us any better than him.
Though I agree that prison system sucks. It's a freaking luxury villa. Now, put a criminal in Canadian Forces prison Edmonton, and I guarantee that he will never commit another crime again. (I think they still do bread and water only for punishments)
Our prison system should concentrate on punishment of criminals first, then rehabilation second |

Additionally, one should probably keep in mind that Canada has one of the lowest recidivism rates in the world. Clearly, we're doing something right in our corrections department. |

| Jails may be a decent place to stay but when bubba wants to share his bed you got no place to go. |

Well, I'm sure our prison system is a lot better than some other countries but it's still not a walk in the park. The minimum security prisons are fairly cozy sure, those are where you may see some computers and games with no fences and stuff. But those are for minor crimes like white collar crime, any major conviction for drug dealing or violent crime type stuff and you'll go to the real jails. Those jails are pretty hardcore, especially when it's a Federal Pen for anyone doing over 3 years (I think that's how it works). I know some characters who have been through that and it's tough, a lot of prisoner on prisoner or guard on prisoner violence.
As much as I think this guy should have his guts ripped out violently, I think the best punishment is living through hell in prison for life. He'll be targeted by all the other prisoners because of the nature of his crimes, so he'll probably be put into protective custody which is even worse. He'll won't get to socialize or hang out in the general population. Just him and his mind for life, he'll slowly go nuts. Killing him would have ended it to early, that would have been the easy way out (exactly way he wanted to kill himself!). |

Col. Williams sentenced to 2 concurrent life sentences with no parole for 25 years
BELLEVILLE, Ont. — Convicted sex killer Col. Russell Williams is addressing the court at his sentencing hearing, saying he's indescribably ashamed of his crimes.
Through tears and his voice breaking, Williams says he deeply regrets what he's done.
He says he has "committed despicable crimes."
Williams is being sentenced to two concurrent life sentences with no possibility of parole for 25 years.
After Williams spoke today, Justice Robert Scott told the court that "the depths of the depravity shown by Russell Williams have no equal."
The life sentence is automatic, with Scott presiding over the once decorated colonel's gruesome case to determine jail time for Williams' sex assaults and fetish break ins.
Prosecutor Lee Burgess says the Crown won't seeking dangerous offender status because it is "superfluous" and would only prolong the suffering of families.
Dangerous offender status would mean he'd be jailed indefinitely.
Williams will still have to demonstrate he is not a danger to the public to get parole.
The Crown wants to seize the sex killer's Nissan Pathfinder and crush it. Police traced the killer through tire marks left by his Pathfinder found in a field near a house belonging to one of his murder victims. |

That was fast. Three day trial and already has the sentencing. I doubt that would happen in the states.
I am sure he feels bad. It's just weird that he couldn't control himself throughout the years. |

That wasn't a trial, he pled quilty so they just have to read out the agreed upon statement of facts. That's what took so long. |

Funny thing is they (Williams and Bernardo) lived in the same neighbourhood and were in the same program at U of T Scarborough the same years. Weird. |

To answer the above question, Fed prison time is 2 years+. 2 years less a day and you're in the provincial system.
I'm not too sure why the media is making such a big deal of his lingerie fetish. Granted the average person isn't breaking into houses to feed their fetish, but lingerie is an extremely common fetish. 20% of men regularly indulge in fantasies revolving around women's lingerie, and almost 50% have had a sexual response to lingerie at least once in their lives. In summary, if you whacked it to the bra models in the Sears catalogue - that counts and YES, you're normal.
Despite comments from the judge and in the papers, Russell Williams is not a serial killer. He's a serial offender yes, but to be classified a serial killer, you need at least three murders. Williams isn't even seriously considered a suspect in anything other than what he confessed to. |
