A close friend of mine found an iPad with similar specs several months ago in the bottom of a shopping cart @ Whole Foods around lower Manhattan/TriBeCa area. After browsing through the pictures, she decided that the owner could clearly afford a new iPad, and that was the end of that.
The same friend, sometime last year found a (new at the time) iPhone 3G while waiting at the Staten Island Ferry terminal. It was still logged onto the owner's facebook account, so she posted as him on his wall, "This is your iPhone. I'm just messaging to let you know that you will never see me again."
To which the owner actually messaged back,"Whatever, it's cool. I have insurance, and they're going to send me an iPhone 3GS now, just please don't make any calls or texts on the phone, thanks."
And that was that... free iPhone, free iPad, no sweat. wtf :wtf:
Only thing I will say, is that she's a really generous person to everyone she knows; constantly buying, constantly treating people when she doesn't have to, and as a result she almost constantly seems to find money or gadgets like the one's above. She just takes it as a sign that she was meant to have whatever it is that she happens to find.
Next time you know beetter. ANYONE who can afford to lose an iPad, can afford to buy another one.

Follow up: dude got his iPad back today, courtesy of FedEx. And actually called and gave an extensive thanks. I actually blushed coz I thought he somehow found this thread, as he verbatim said "I've nearly given up hope on honesty among people, thanks for proving me wrong - especially on something as big as this". He asked my address, so he can re-pay for FedEx charges and said he's sending a little token of thanks...
Stay tuned...

If that's your friend's justification down inside she probably should know whether it's right or not... but then it's between her and her principles.
I'm also Mr. Generosity - I friggin treat strangers like nobody's business. Heck, who knows how many times I've had various moochers in Pacha and other places killing my $250+ bottles of Grey Goose and I'd be the one pouring the drinks like was gonna spoil. I spent over a grand last year treating my co-workers to lunch, breakfast, etc.
Yet I don't feel like I deserved to keep someone's property. It's interesting, I was thinking about "Trading Places" and the deeper message - if I wasn't making a decent living, would I still do the right thing?
In my case, the iPad was lost at an airport - they guy said it must have slipped out of his luggage pocket while he was loading it up in the trunk. Circumstances are immaterial - it's the action that matters. Some folks have no qualms and "finders/keepers" is what's right for them. As someone who lost some serious sh!t I only hope that I never have to but if I do that someone else will be decent enough in my lifetime for me to experience it as well.

Good to hear. I've often thought back to inaccurate assumptions I've made or how I didn't properly react to someone, due to either stress or because I was focused on myself. If you're well grounded and put forth the effort to do a random act of kindness, you leave open the door for all kinds of unexpected things. That's part of the fun of it.
Here's a story it reminds me of its a little sappy but true.
A wise woman who was traveling in the mountains found a precious stone in a stream.
The next day she met another traveler who was hungry, and the wise woman opened her bag to share her food.
The hungry traveler saw the precious stone and asked the woman to give it to him. She did so without hesitation.
The traveler left rejoicing in his good fortune. He knew the stone was worth enough to give him security for a lifetime. But, a few days later, he came back to return the stone to the wise woman. “I’ve been thinking,” he said. “I know how valuable this stone is, but I give it back in the hope that you can give me something even more precious. Give me what you have within you that enabled you to give me this stone.”

Now, THAT is a cool story, bro. :D
Thanks to my fellow TAs for re-enforcing my decision, as I fought pangs of doubt.

So if someone can afford it its okay to steal from them? :wtf:
