Let's Talk About iPads

I got one for work (we're making a version of our existing touchpanel interface for a couple clients), and it's actually kind of cool. As someone who owns roughly zero other Mac products, I don't know anything about apps, aside from those I recognize from the Android market. So, some questions:

1) What are some good apps and/or games for this thing? The only reason I can see myself actually using it would be as a sort of laptop substitute @ home (browsing & email before bed), taking notes, or because of some unique apps.

2) What are some nice cases for it? I'm not looking for the generic $30 Best Buy option. I haven't found a lot that I like. Most either look really cheesy, girly, or useless and cumbersome. The two that have come closest so far are these:
Sturdy
Not so sturdy

I'd really prefer a completely closed version of that first link (just all-out tank that I wouldn't have to worry about on job sites. ability to drop it is a plus) or a nice, logo-free black leather one. see: not cheap. hatehatehate

3) Do any of you have them? Any advice regarding battery life, speed, screen durability, theft-proofing that you have? Other 'essential' accessories?

4) I grabbed a 64 w/o 3g. Is this a mistake? I figure that I can already get wifi almost everywhere, and, when in doubt, I can just tether it from my phone. I've got a month to swap it out, though, if I change my mind.

C0R Version: I needed/bought an iPad for work. What case(s) should I buy, and what else can I do with it?

I'd like to extend a preemptive welcome to all those displaced from our technology forum, as well. No, I don't want a ing iPad sign.

Speck makes a hard shell for the MacBooks that I really like, and it appears they make the same type of cases for the iPad:

The thing that worries me about this (like the one I linked), though, is the lack of anything to actually cover the screen. I'm far more worried about dropping something on it than about dropping it on something.

I wouldn't go with the first one because it looks like it's 2 pieces which will be a pain in the ass in certain situations. Second one looks really nice though and the fact that it can act as a stand is a big plus IMO.

Yeah, you literally have to use an allen wrench to secure it. :wtf:

What situations are you referring to, though?

Well you would simply put a thin clear layer of plastic on your screen to protect it from any scratches and stuff like that. The same that people put on their Iphones, only bigger. I don't know if there's much that could be done to protect the screen from a drop to be honest, that is if it occurs when the case is open (which I think is what you're concerned about). Also, I doubt you'd want anything that could interfere with the touch interface.

Goddammit I wish there was a third 'Meet The _____' movie.

Well let's say you're commuting and are in a really tight space. It makes a difference. I mean in any situation really where you don't have a surface to place the other piece on top of, I could just see it as being sort of an inconvenience becasue not only are you carrying a larger volume in your hands, you are also carrying two separate items.

Yeah, I mean that's obviously a concern, but I don't like to bulk my iPhone up with a big case. I figure it's just technology and if it breaks I can get another one, but using it without a hulking piece of plastic covering it is worth the risk for me.

edit: This might be different in the case of an iPad, obviously. It's a little more expensive plus you'd be using it as a computer, basically.

Friends of mine that have iPads use the covers that flip over like a notebook to reveal the screen, if that makes sense.

What I have in mind is a full-body shell, so that, when I'm not using it, the screen has some sort of impact protection.

Example: I bring it out to a house and leave it with the rest of my stuff until the client arrives, but someone drops a hammer or drill onto it. Zagg shields can't do anything about that.
