Nah, 1998-2000, it was about trance.
But no, trance isn't the first people listen to AT ALL.
Trance doesn't come on MTV or radio, and house is. Well, I'm talking about David Guetta-house here. Thats what people introduces to EDM. |

| There have been different gateway genres in each era. Once it would have been hardcore, then Euro, then big beat, then trance, then electro house and now, increasingly, dubstep. The genres people graduate onto have changed too - once it might have been prog, then minimal, and now commonly deep house. |

| I generally laugh at those who're stuck onto deep house, mostly because a lot of them get such a complex about other genres, and yet I think that there is so much beauty around if people stopped following the 'normal' ways. |

yeah system-j i think you're right about that. i used to listen almost solely to indie music..so indie electronica was my gateway to EDM.
i had been attending trance parties occasionally before that, but only when urged to do so by a friend who had been on TA already...
when i finally realized how much i enjoyed dance music, trance was the genre that had the most impact on me. it didn't take long for me to develop an interest in deep house, followed by tech house, and then finally techno. Now I'll listen to just about anything.
The only genres in EDM that I just can't seem to enjoy would be dubstep (even the recommendations from many TAs of 'good dubstep' don't stick with me..), breaks, and d&b. i think the latter two were probably, for the most part, before my time... |

Here. This right here just doesn't make sense to me, yet it dominates 99 % of every musical preference discussion out there. Why shouldn't we criticize each other's musical tastes? What's so dangerous? It might even lead to - gasp - someone broadening their taste.
But yeah i know, that's crazy talk. |

Hmmm, I would says your starting point was later or very different than mine as for me it started very low, went up and then went down again, but not that far. |

Im just chiming in to say Its EXTREMELY hard to believe that ANYONE listened to Trance before listening to Straight Dance/House/Euro. That stuff gets heavy play on "mainstream" TV/Radio/etc....Trance, is basiaclly for Driving/Racing, or those Festival/Beach outdoor times. House is generally better for Top 40 clubs becuase its ezier to dance to and does not have random builds that people struggle to anitcipate.
I'm easily the Biggest Trance head here, but doesn't mean I dont listen to other genres, in and out of EDM.
To consider Trance for "Novices" is hilarious...
Alcohol is House/Euro/Dance. Trance is Chronic. Progressive, Deep House, Minimal, DnB, etc, is Cocaine/XTC/MDMA/extreme drug of choice....
Not that any of this really even matters... |
