Objectively is stuff is melodic tech-house, pretty much. Somehow "electro" has become the new catch-all term for electronic music here so that's what people call him. And holy ing he is popular here. EVERY SINGLE under 35 type has heard of him.

Yeah I've understood that from watching some of the videos of appearances / concerts he's made. I guess Calling Berlin did much of the work for that. It doesn't matter if he's mainstream in Germany, I still have respect for what he does. Some of his tracks/remixes blows my mind. He could never be mainstream, or half as popular, in any other country than Germany in my opinion.

His success in the last few years literally is 98% due to the movie. His music isn't bad but it kinda blows my mind that he is so popular. His music isn't even that flashy or anything.

I have much the same impression of Deadmau5. A lot of his music sounds exactly like the ultimate stereotype of big-room, empty club music, and yet he has crossed over massively. You would think a cross-over act would be someone who twisted the formula a little bit, a la The Prodigy or Daft Punk.
My brother asked me if I wanted to go see Kalkbrenner, and my brother is usually a good yardstick for what the kids are listening to, so I'd say he's certainly big outside Germany as well.

The thing about Kalkbrenner is that his music doesn't even sound that big-room. It's very understated. There's no big white noise explosions, no big drops or ear-piercing stadium synths. It's like the total antithesis to what's currently big (dubstep, electro house) and yet he's massively popular.
I think Mau5's sucess really is largely due to the mouse gimmick. His music doesn't stand out from the rest of the prog/electro house being churned out but it's "look at the guy with the funny mouse head! There's a demand for electronic music within the mainstream and most people will just chug the first thing they are being marketed.

Are you talking about modern so-called "trance"? House, in its common form, is the most mainstream and popular kind of dance music there is...it's what all pop music is remixed into for club listening and dancing. Not sure how even cheesy trance would be more for beginners? Everyone starts with house.
