I have no problem w it. It doesn't effect my day to day life so not a huge deal. (the monarchy part)
As for multiculturalism, what's wrong with having a sense of identity of where you came from and keeping those traditions alive (traditions that are reasonable and don't clash severely with the country you're in) WHILE adjusting to your new home etc.
If you can't adjust or mesh where you came from to where you are, and find some happy medium find another country to live in.
It doesn't have to be either or. |

I don't have any issue with those who want to keep a sense of identity and tradition from where they came from and I would actually encourage people to hold onto their history. What I do have a problem with is those that feel the citizens of their new country should change their ways and laws to accommodate them. |

For sure man. Like some of the hardliner Muslims in the UK that want Sharia law implimented there, that's just ridiculous. Or that one teenager who got killed by her father because she was 'too western' while living here... so sad. :(
Also w your quote how have people thought multiculturalism has failed?I dont' get it. If anything Canada is proof it's working pretty well (elbeit if we don't 'really' have an Canadian Identity per say) |

That's the thing though, with the charter of rights, you can't say that some group are ok with keeping their cutlure, and others not (hardliners in your example). |

there is a difference between one's culture (history, food, traditional clothes, celebrating the holidays) and the way you live your life as new immigrant, interracting with others and most importantly - how you treat other cultures, including the culture and traditions of the country you live in (your second home) - which affects people around you who are not necessarily part of your family (people at work for example)
just because my country celebrates Christmas on Jan. 07, doesn't mean I should go around demanding that it becomes a holiday - I'm more then welcome to take it as a day off and go to a Christmas night mass on Jan 6th
also, a lot of people forget that just because things are done differently here, doesn't mean it's wrong.. it's just different
and I'm all for this - if the ways and means of life here really clash with your mentality and the way you were brought up back at home, then you can either get the out, or deal with the fact that you need to adjust - NOT make OTHERS adjust to YOUR cultural aspects
it makes me cringe when I hear stories about whiney immigrants or newcomers who want this or want that.. no wonder many Canadians dislike foreigners :( |

the only thing you'd here me complain about Canada, is probably the paperwork involved with getting anything done - but that's just because I'm so damn impatient!
otherwise, me is happy - althought my parents would probably dislike it here, so we'll just keep them back in Ukie land! |

| For those who say we lack a culture, read up on history instead of making ignorant statements. Our culture itself is multiculturalism whether you believe/accept it or not. We were founded with 4 different cultures who didnt align themselves with each but agreed to live together with a common goal (not being taken over by the US and having all cultural identity wiped). Ever since then we have welcomed people from varying countries in waves at different times (Italians, Greeks, Chinese, Indians etc) and our culture is based on acceptance and a mix mash of everything these immigrants have brought to this country over the years + the culture of the natives. |

The west countries are settler nations and they all are multicultural by nature. Historically, Canada's culture has been highly influenced by the British, Americans and Natives. Our culture may have evolved due to influences from others but the roots of our culture are and should always be a combination of the three I already stated. |

I think I'm agreeing w you here Malek. (Hope things are well btw). :)
also I agree with Kris as well with the 'forcing everyone in the new country you just settled in' to fit your ideals. That's just stupid. There's a huge huge difference between that and respecting tradition/your background and ethnicity etc. |
