So ask yourself if you'd rather they book your type of DJs or fill the place and remain open so you can go there for the several bookings per year that you do happen to like? There's plenty of variety around so if you don't like an event or 2 just don't go, no big deal and no reason to trash a place for doing what any business exists to do (make $).

you're telling me those lineups wouldnt pack out the venue like last night did? i completely disagree and those are the all access caliber lineups were talking about that guv became known for. i still to this day remember each of those parties. they were absolutely incredible!!
and im sure there is no question about it the club still made a killing monetarily at the end. |

That's exactly what would happen. Unfortunately, people that would go out to see a lineup of Tech/Trance headliners are probably in their mid-to-late 20s by now, if not older. Most of these people don't go clubbing on the regular and can't be counted on to fill up a venue as big as the Guv.
I know a million people who were at the club last night who, a year or two ago, probably had never set foot in Guv before. Leading up to the event a LOT of people in the Queen/College west scene were hyping it up and calling the lineup "epic" or whatever. A lot more people would go to see a Calvin Harris type than a Richie Hawtin.
And to be honest, I'd rather see a skanky neon-clad 19 year old than a cracked out Skasian.
Times change. Just because most people on this board, or in this "scene" don't like a certain brand of EDM, doesn't mean it's not what people want to hear. And it definitely does not make it bad music.
And for the record, Justin Bieber is very talented at singing and dancing. Most of us can't do what he can do. Which makes him good too. |

While there's no such thing as objectively enjoyable music, I do believe that to some extent there is objectively good music. Music that is innovative & original, composed & performed with a high degree of proficiency, has instrumental & lyrical depth, and is made with a certain level of dedication can be "good music" by those merits alone, whereas something like Justin Bieber...isn't. He might be able to sing well, but otherwise "his" music (or what his name is attached to) embodies none of those qualities - its simple, derivative, unoriginal, uninspired, mass-marketed garbage made with simple intent of producing a profit. Its cool if someone enjoys it, but its by no means "good music". |

i certainly understand where youre coming from and youre point of view. the ravers/clubbers today are of a new generation. everyone is certainly entitled to their own genre of music that makes them happy, EDM or not, or whatever genre of EDM it happens to be. it may not be bad music to some, which is fine, but you certainly cant even begin to try to compare the skill of the DJs like those on last nights bill, compared to those of a richie hawtin. people like hawtin are on a completely different level skill-wise and with creativity. what that man does on the fly controlling 4 decks in mindblowing. its sad to say that most would rather see calvin harris, than hawtin.
but in all actuality, i dont understand why people in their mid-late 20s wouldnt go out. i mean do people feel their too old for clubs? those are the exact people i think who should be out enjoying their youth. im 27 and have have been in the EDM scene coming up on a decade now and have no signs of stopping any time soon. people my age or even older can have priorities in order and still go out to hear the music they love and support the EDM scene.
to me, the music played by the DJs on last nights line up sounds like noise pollution.
and yes, id much rather see skantilly clad girls, than cracked out skasians for sure. |
