Sometimes you also have to think about the people that cannot get to a LCBO or Beer store. Vdub is great that you have a car, and are able bodied, but that is not the case with everyone.
Allowing the elderly to pick something up with their groceries makes so much sense. Why should a grandma have to go to two different stores, sometimes kilometers apart, just to complete her shopping? They put drug stores in grocery stores, why not a small beer/wine store? |
Yes I s'pose.. |

just like putting graphic warnings, raising prices and making packs not visible in stores have reduced cigarette sales, right? |
Apart from the fact that cigarettes are very addicting (this is like comparing apples to oranges, alcohol vs. tobacco) and have a variety of carcinogenic factors attached - YES, SALES HAVE DECLINED over the past 10 years, FYI.
And banning smoking in as many places as possible, along with price increases, have also helped!
Since 2001, the "year Canada became the first country to require cigarette manufacturers to add picture-based warnings to its packages" (quoted), a lot has changed. Statistics Canada has the rest:

Numbers of smokers and sales of smokes drop remarkably, especially if you go 20-30 years back, big big difference.
If the government finds a way to deal with the native cigarette operations, that would also help curb smoking, as cheap contraband cigarettes is the main problem right now.

Ignorance is bliss, right?

How far do you mo'fuggas have to drive to pick up some Beer? How many LCBOs are there in Mississauga for example?
Not being able to buy beer at the corner store doesn't make sense to me. What time does the LCBO/beer store close at? |

| Only half an hour left for beer. Good thing there are like 5 places within 10 minutes from here and that a 12 of Becks is on sale for 11.99$. |

10pm. Some 11pm, but it seems to be a rarity now. |

I have ZERO issue with going to the LCBO or Beer Store...
It's the lazy people that want it in corner stores.. |
lets not forget those of us that live in places where there are neither.. |

well, you're the one that CHOSE to live there.
just like the residents that chose to live in then entertainment district but are now complaining about their own decision while trying to blame others for it. |

this was a choice made out of necessity. had the last 3 years gone as well as the 5 previous i wouldn't be living bsck in my home town. but happens. not everyone lives the magical fairytale life.
Vdub was commenting that liquor in convience stores was for lazy people. not everyone has an lcbo/beer store that easily accessible to them, and in cases like this town feel like driving 20 min 1 way /walking X amount of time to pick up a bottle of wine or case of beer. |

So right off the bat, you're saying that your opinion on the subject is considerably coloured by your emotions. Not the best launch point for level-headed discussion.
That's your opinion, but data shows otherwise. The high rate of alcoholism isn't due to the availability of alcohol, it's a product of existing social conditions. Plenty of societies have had and continue to have liberal access to intoxicants without addiction and the accompanying societal ills - the deciding factor is the amount of stress under which the populace lives.
So, the fix for booze problems in Russia isn't to ban booze - people will always find a way to ease their pain and if properly formulated and regulated spirits aren't available they'll resort to concocting considerably more dangerous bathtub versions - it's to ease the suffering of the people. |
Ding ding. TKO. Right on bud. |

Okay maybe lazy was a tad harsh but to complain about having to drive 20 mins for beer?? Cmon man...
And as for the question posed earlier about distance to LCBO's in Mississauga. I have one closer to me than the supermarket or closest corner store.
I like having a specialty shop where they only sell booze and beer.. |

I am not a big drinker by any stretch of the imagination... and having lived with both options I much prefer to have beer sold in the corner store.
NY state allows the sale of beer in the corner store and liquor is sold in specialty wine and liquor stores. This seems like a good compromise.
I think that life is about choice and unfortunately some people do not make the right decisions but I don't think further government regulation will change that. Prohibition anyone? |
