Not being able to buy beer at the corner store doesn't make sense to me. What time does the LCBO/beer store close at? |
Pretty far in some cases. I lived at Creditview and Eglington, and the closest store was 3+km away. That is 35min walk each way, 20min bike ride each way, or about 50 minutes on the bus total, just to get some alcohol. Where as there is a Metro right across the street.
Basing the ease of access on access to a vehicle is idiotic. |

Agreed. I have two LCBO's relatively close to me, within a 5-10 min walk, but the closest Beer Store is easily a 15min drive and not walkable at all. |

They do sell a lot of beers in the LCBO...
I do like Fitz's compromise though... |

Alcohol is a serious issue. And especially when it comes to distribution, if you make it easily accessible then it will result in problems. How are you going to monitor it? I definitely would not want it become like in Russia, where until very recently beer wasn't even considered to be an alcoholic beverage, where alcohol is easy to find at most corner stores, and there are TENS OF thousands of deaths related to alcohol every year.
Keep liquor high quality, well priced, and very controlled. Or we will see an increase in alcohol related violence and accidents/deaths. Let's not make a problem out of it!

I can't tell whether this post is serious or not...
edit nevermind...read the rest of your posts *facepalm*

Yes actually we should make it legal to buy marijuana as we please. Or are you from the 1930's, a time when marijuana killed people by the dozens, changed them into raging psychopaths and raped our children?

Okay maybe lazy was a tad harsh but to complain about having to drive 20 mins for beer?? Cmon man...
|
How the is that NOT a valid complaint?? 20 minutes is beyond ridiculous to have to drive just to get a few beers. I shouldn't even have to drive to begin with. It should be within walking distance (eg. 10 minute walk) |

No where near the selection that the beer store has and only selling in six-packs drives the price up. |

| Having to drive 20 minutes + for beer is absurd. In Montreal you never have to walk for more than 5-10 minutes to have a nice selection to choose from. And yea some LCBO stores are nice, but in Quebec I'd say we have a way bigger variety of available beers overall, when you factor in the SAQ, grocery stores, depanneurs, specialty shops/markets, etc...which usually all tend to carry a different selection. |

I'd say Quebec has nailed it pretty damn close for all things booze. Drinking age at 18, cheaper/easier to get beer and wine, later last call, SAQ is still like our LCBO... You can come up with as many "theoretical" points against Ontario giving easier booze access but when it's implemented in the neighbouring province with no noticeable negative impacts then you really don't have much to stand on. If there was massive abuse, more booze related crime and deaths, greater number of alcoholics etc then I could see your point but that is not the case at all.
It comes down to mature use of alcohol and educating society. I also believe if you treat people like babies (such as Ontario's "we know whats best for you" regulation on booze) they'll behave like babies. Treat them like adults and you can expect better more mature behaviour. Compare the average person's behaviour in MTL's dense club areas with Toronto's and you'll get the point.
Ultimately despite public opinion and pressure I doubt we'll see any of this change rapidly or soon at all. There's too many people with legalized monopolies that are making them rich to say "ahh ya, people want different so lets change it up". It's comparable to the speed limits in Ontario not being raised in the last 50 years despite immense improvements in cars, roads, safety etc. The police are the ones that would ultimately say lets raise it, yet they're also the same ones getting rich off the tickets from lower rates. So why would they change anything? |

| Where do you live that you're a 20 min drive from the beer store but closer to everything else?? |

you'd think that having alcohol more available would result in more use, wouldn't you?
actually, that's not the case. if you limit the times that people can buy alcohol, they will invariably buy more than they need... and drink it!
same with licensing hours, cut off at 2am and people will binge for the last half an hour. keep the bar open and they may not even bother with another because they know they can get one if they decide to.... |

Again, you tell me where you live that EVERYTHING that you need is a 10 min walk... |

LOL for real. I could walk out of my door right now and find 20 spots to buy beer within a 10 block radius. That would drive me BANANA's if I had to go that far for booze, and I would probably overstock at that point to avoid repeat trips! :stongue: :happy2:
Everyone knows that prohibition/restricted access actually makes it increasingly fashionable, not the other way around. |

That's the whole point Vdub. Things should be more accessible, especially when it comes to things that are easier to transport closer to the consumer. Somethings will never be within a 10 minute walk, but should strive towards that goal.
Having an Ikea within a 10 min walk is never going to happen, because of the constraints of the of store...but a bottle of beer? Should be very simple. |
