Went to Montreal recently for the Jazz Festival and marveled where was the drunken youth like the one we have on the Entertainment district every Friday/Sunday nite.

Where do you live that you're a 20 min drive from the beer store but closer to everything else??

currently I live in KING township.. where the closest beer/lcbos are Schomberg and Bolton.. and because my doctors feel I shouldn't be allowed to drive. if i were to want a 6 pack for a weekend off or a bottle of wine, my walk there and BACK would be 5 hours or so... but there is a sobey 5 mins walk away... why should i be denied a bottle of wine when i decide to suprised family and cook sunday dinner for my brother and his gf on a sunday evening because of my physical location

you'd think that having alcohol more available would result in more use, wouldn't you?

actually, that's not the case. if you limit the times that people can buy alcohol, they will invariably buy more than they need... and drink it!

same with licensing hours, cut off at 2am and people will binge for the last half an hour. keep the bar open and they may not even bother with another because they know they can get one if they decide to....

This is actually fact.

Again, you tell me where you live that EVERYTHING that you need is a 10 min walk...

Etobicoke. LCBO is a 10 minute walk, however The Beer Store is a 15 minute drive. Lots of smaller grocery stores and deli's are a 5 minute walk too.

i cannot understand one thing. i live in europe but for the past 6 years i've been visiting toronto every year for 2-3 months each year.

how is it possible that you cannot buy alcohol sunday afternoon (after 5pm) or friday and saturday after 9-10pm?! this is really unbelievable, i'm not getting into pricing of booze. i feel like it's expensive but on the other hand canada is a very prosperous country so probably most people can easily afford it.

why your government won't easy up on the regulations a bit?! trust me, it won't make your country like russia or ukraine where people make their own booze, but i think it would make everything way more convenient. for me, it's sometimes very hard to imagine living in a country as regulated as canada. cheers ;)

Please keep in mind that this the province of Ontario, and not the whole country of Canada.

Personally, I don't really give a damn one way or the other. The one issue that hasn't been brought up, is should the Ontario Gov't give up their cash cow? If the provincial gov't gives up the LCBOs, which is quite probable if they allow liquor into corner stores, the only way the gov't gets its cut is to up alcohol taxes significantly. This leads to the same problem we have with illegal smuggled cigarettes.

Sorry to those out in rural areas, but alcohol isn't a right. You live in a RURAL area. By definition there are fewer services. LCBOs are one of them.

People complain of unfair taxation all the time. The LCBO is one of the fairest modes of gov't revenue collection avaiable because it only targets consumers of the product. Not all gov't services are revenue neutral (e.g. Education). Frankly, I like the province having control over the LCBO because it allows funding of programs that we might not otherwise afford without regressive taxation.

More like LCBO having a monopoly so that it can charge whatever price.

LCBO and the Beer Store will probably turn into more specialized alcohol shops while the convenience stores will carry the standard Canadian and Blue and whatever regular crap most people drink. (along with your Captain Morgans and Canadian Club) This already happens in rural areas with specially licensed conveniences stores serves as outlet of LCBO.

It'll benefit the consumers more because the prices will be fairer, but the govt will still collect alcohol taxes. Just because alcohol is not being sold in LCBO, doesn't mean that the govt can tax it, right?
