The scene is way better today than it has been in the past 5 years. There are more quality shows and there is a wider variety of dance music to choose from. |
I think the main argument was the fact that most of the people attending these events are not actually going for the music. Sure a few may appreciate what Skillex or others at the event and many other events do but the majority of them may not even know who is playing or know more than one song from that performer.
There has been so many shows I've been to that I randomly hear people talk about how they wish they would see "insert some random non-relevant to the genre artist" instead of "insert Headliner name". And the more popular "I just wanna get effed up" crowd. |

But come on, most of the people there are just there cuz it's "cool" and will forget about it when the next cool thing happens. Just like when emo was cool and guys grew out their hair, or wore eyeliner *cough* Skrillex *cough*
Now everyone wants to hang out with the not-cool (so therefore cool) dj making the weirdest music, again, Skrillex.
I won't say they don't have good taste, since this guy is the best in the genre, but they are seriously just riding the band wagon.
Some of us are getting old, and that is part of the problem. (If you're not sure if you're "old" yet, turn on the radio and see if your childhoods decade of music has a station dedicated to it).
I can't help but think back to rock-n-roll when it was getting started.
1. Starts small, pure, underground.
2. Gets bad ettention, everyone who likes it obviously does drugs.
3. Because it's bad, it gets popular
4. becomes mainstream
5. artists like Train are now "rock"
6. falls off the mainstream and gives way to Hip-Hop
Hip-hop repeats this same cycle, then gives way to some form of elecro/dubstep....
Musical Cycle... |

| if you talk to a lot of Dub Step purist, they can tell you that they don't really Skrillex anymore. They say that he's changed. |

AKA, got famous, which isn't cool... it's called "selling out"... A term which no one can REALLY explain
Which change do they care about?
From First to Last? Or was it Sonny? Oh, wait, it's JUST Skrillex that's changed??? haha, come on dub kids.... |

| You guys need to get over yourselves. You're complaining about the "quality" of people attending a show you'd never even go to in the first place featuring acts you don't even like listening to. What ing sense does that make? |

That's how most people get into the music. Not everybody is blessed with an abundance of electronic dance music knowledge without first being exposed to it through events that play EDM. All of you posting here were most likely new to the EDM scene at one time or another. Even if you had been listening to EDM in your basement for 10 years before attending an event that doesn't make you cooler than anybody else.
It's elitist and egotistical to say that you are better than someone else because they don't have the encyclopedia of EDM or trance knowledge that you do.
I'd rather play for a newbie crowd or an over-the-hill washed up "it used to be better in the old days" crowd any day of the week.
It doesn't matter what they go for, it's what they experience, learn, and take away from the event that truly matters.
, not everyone can be 100% all about the music like me... it's just not possible. ;) |
