I'm surprised no one has brought it up yet, but how heavily Giger'ed out was the alien world? I was trying to think of a movie that had more, but I came up with nothing.

It looks like he didn't care for it either.
I gotta say, even more than his art, wearing crocs to a national film premiere is a true sign of his depravity. |

Sure, this is true of almost any genre. In this case I think it's important to ask what is Prometheus' position within the genre, how does it expand on the themes of previous Alien films and why does it openly alludes to both Golden Age sci-fi and b-horror movies. |
No, you don't understand. This is especially true of SF, to the extent it's a key mechanic of how the genre operates. You could point out the exact same features in any bad SF film: "It contains lots of references to canonic/iconic SF" + "The script is laughable" = "Self-aware commentary on the genre". It's a cut and paste argument that doesn't display any genuine reading or understanding. I dismiss what you've quoted as a bad film student essay because it talks about sci-fi 101 without having read sci-fi 101. And I'd rather you read some academic primers than have me truncate them for you. |

Movie didn't even make it to #1, that says it all right there. It's not like Ridley was trying to make some obscure indie film...he's well aware it has the appeal to the masses and I don't think it did.
Anything to do with the aliens series is really a joke past Aliens. The first one was a spectacule with an amazing creature and that great chest burster scene. Cameron did his regular thing in Aliens, but he did it well. After that it's not worth reviving and rereviving and crossing over with the predator... |

Ok, that really shouldn't be ANYONE'S guide to good films. How many good movies would you have missed, just because they weren't "number one" on somebody's scale?
Do you only buy books that are on the NY Times #1 bestsellers list? I hope not. |
