I was impressed with the set up and the port-a-potties. Not so much with the food selection.
Line up was okay, nothing special. It's nice to see Toronto finally competing with world class cities for large scale electronic music festivals. I'm excited for VELD and it's lineup :) |

Amazing venue! I didn't feel like I was in Toronto. Hope there's more festivals there.
The music was mostly meh. A lot of it was too hard for me. The only sets I really liked was Nic Fanciulli and Guy Gerber.
I don't know how anyone could like the music on the main stage. Sounds like audio garbage. What genre was that stuff anyways?
I managed to bring my own alcohol in and saved a TON of money. What a rip off those $9 beers were. |

I guess you can classify that genre as that "dirty dutch" / "electro-prog". Entire song is car alarms+white noise I guess.

Good times good times. Overall I'd say they did a pretty good job with everything considering it was the first time around. Not really fair to compare it to festivals that have had multiple years to spot problems and fix them. Perfect example would be Electric Zoo and the dust a few years back. There was nothing even close to sucking on that scale at DD and if the worst fail of the weekend was a clogged line for a few hours it aint all that bad. I still say aside from the line issue the whole Rogers thing was just dumb. I bought my tickets normally online the day they came out for $3 less than my friends paid through Rogers plus I got them mailed to me instead of dealing with that BS getting them at the festival. Who knows how much of it was Rogers vs organisers messing up but imo sponsors should stick to plastering their name all over crap (not the dj booth as someone mentioned, that's just weak) and handing out promo stuff at the festival, no need to get into selling tickets. Also, $9 for a king can of Heiny aint that bad. Most clubs/events these days charge around $7 for a bottle/normal can so proportionally $2 more is on the same scale. Yes it's pricey and whatnot but if that's your beef it should be with the industry as a whole not one festival for charging the going rate. Water price is the true teller of whether they're trying to gangbang your wallet or not and the fact bottles were cheap + free refills readily available in my eyes says they weren't.
As for the music itself, for me the beach stage was the whole festival. Everything was just "right" about that place. The lineup, the people, the area itself, stage setup and sound, it's hard to find anything to complain about. Could've done without Mark Knight in the lineup where he was as I don't think he was a good follower to C&C or opener to Fanciulli who both played the best sets I heard. Definitely not the tribal side of C&C but I didn't really expect that given they were playing outdoors at a festival on a beach. If that's what you're looking for, go see them at Stereo as they're booked often enough and that type of setting brings out the drums you seek. I didn't catch Richie's set which I'm not happy about as from many I've talked to it was the best of the weekend for them. None of the music I heard blew me away but I didn't expect it to as festivals and short time slots rarely bring out the best in a DJ.
I also give the organisers credit for bookings and a stage setup that just works for everyone. The majority of the crowd was the younger neon electro crowd and for the most part if you were at the beach stage you didn't even have to suffer seeing these people in your peripheral vision. And likewise for them, they could easily stay at the mainstage and avoid the old timers who would surely kill their buzz. It's win/win and a formula for a festival that can outlive the current mainstream blowup of EDM. Take a look at the Veld lineup and you'll see the exact opposite, their booking formula is toast the day their 16-21 year old demo grows up or gets bored. I really hope the revenue DD brought in was enough motivation for them to do it the same but bigger next year. There's tons more space in that area (potentially even use the ampitheatre as a stage) and our city has the population to support something double or triple the size if done properly. Spend a bit extra on more/bigger names, maybe add an extra day, keep it at the same venue and just tweak a few things and we could end up with a beauty of an annual party. |

I had a decent time at DD, but mostly bc of friends. There is potential for this festival, but there are a lot of work to be done IMO.
I only went for Sun, and missed out on the chaos of Sat. There wasn't much of a lineup when I got in around 3, though I can easily see how this could have been a goat with not enough security for check in and 3 ticket booth attendants. If this festival gets even bigger next year, more efficient way will be required.
Walked around to get a feel for the place, and I thought overall things were pretty well placed for most part. I know there was a brochure with a map, but maybe some signs directing people where each stage was be nice?
ATM disaster already covered by many. Didn't think there was enough food vendors offering more variety of food, though the vendors didn't look very busy. Maybe because the food was so bloody expensive. Same with beer, but I suppose this is capitalism, after all. But there was plenty of space, so more vendors could come in for next year I suppose.
Was very disappointed with the soccer viewing setup. If I knew that small tent with no volume was what I'd end up with, I'd have gone to a pub to watch the match instead. Appreciate the thought, but if something is going to be done, please do it properly.
Liked the setup of each stage, except for Canada stage which did not look inviting at all. Kinda felt bad for the DJs playing at that stage. Had to wander a bit to find the other main stage. Sound was good, once the techs figured out there was some distortion going on during some of the sets.
Music wise, I know it's first year, and DD was trying to attract variety of crowd, but did not like most of the music played on Sun. Though I left early because Mark Knight sucked so bad, and a bit bummed out of missing out on Fanciulli.
I'd like to see nu disco party for Echo Beach stage for one of the days. Small trance stage would be nice. And less tech, because I'm so bored of that sound... lol
I didn't think it was worth 94 bucks I paid for one day access, but then again, I just wanted to check out DD and see what's up with it. Glad that there is something like this in Toronto, and that it was success attendance wise.
With a better lineup, I will check out DD again. |
