There is absolutely no black and white here. There is no cure for most mental afflictions, only damage control, and if something doesn't work (whether that's therapy w/o medication, or medication) the doctor will ask if you would like to try something else, and so it goes.
Most people don't really have any clue how an SSRI or whatever actually works, so yeah. Not really going to take your uninformed opinion seriously. I remember when I finally decided to try some medication and I got flak from some of my friends for it, like I was a bad person or weak-willed for trying that route.
Yeah, how about off. |

I remember in a university class discussion about a variety of philosophical issues several years back, a girl said that she had been cast out of her church in high school for taking anti-depressants, because it was a sign that she had given up on God. Another girl said that when she came to university and disclosed to her roommates that she took anti-depressants, the roommates requested that she be transferred to a different room :wtf:
I don't like anti-depressants because of how they make me feel, but some people's reactions to them ing astound me. |

Yeah, like, unless they know what SSRI stands for and what serotonin is. It's really a mystery how it works. |

The degree of misunderstanding truly is a parody unto itself, though. Most everyone not in the know approaches it like a ing garbage stand-up comic: "You mean the anti-depressants make you want to kill yourself when you start or stop taking them?? HYUK, HYUK, HYUK, HOW DOES THAT WORK *patronizing vernacular* I don't think it's workin' for ya!!!"
*audience roaring in laughter oh he said that line yeah that's his line* |

| Yeah, go say "Selective Serontonin Reuptake Inhibitor" to somebody and they'll totally understand what it's like to take those types of medications. Totally. |

I guess it depends on what other resources + support systems a person has. I think it's far easier for a lot of people to resort to taking meds when they don't have lots of social support, money, time, etc. Mental wellness...emotional health/healing..whatever you want to call it, takes work. Even mentally stable/emotionally healthy/whatever people don't just wake up happy and content every day. Everyone has to work at it and learn coping skills.
It sucks that there are more people with mental health issues than without. Everyone and their dog (for real, I know lots of people with pets on meds, lololol) is taking something for depression, anxiety, whatever. And I'm sure that a lot of it has to do with this message that gets shoved down everyone's throat that YOU MUST BE HAPPY ALL THE TIME AND NOT HAVE PROBLEMSSSSS. Anxiety is a natural response to stressful situations. And if a person never experiences low points or depressed moods or whatever, how will they learn to cope with those feelings later on?
Anyhow, my mom has had mental health issues her whole life, and she would most definitely be ed without medication. Well, more ed than she already is.
I think that's sort of on topic. |

Right, so anyone who has ever taken a biology class in high school would know, and nobody else. What an exclusive club.
Serotonin makes you happy>blocking reuptake means more serotonin in the synapse>more serotonin makes you more happy, golly this is hard to understand.

| Nobody who hasn't taken an SSRI could possibly know what it's like. I mean those Zoloft commercials with the animation which shows exactly how they work are super hard to understand. That plus the undeniable facts that medications affect everyone in exactly the same way. You just don't understand bro, the feels are so strong. |

| On topic, IMO the side effects far outweigh the benefits, and the fact that any responsible doctor recommends therapy before medicating is indicative enough that its not a "cure." More of a crutch. |
