TA DJ's: Choose the challenge

Hey all, so there has been a decent amount of interest in a new challenge, but some of us are bored of the old genre challenge and want to poll the crowd to see which type of challenge we should do for the newest round.
Cast your votes and we'll get it organized. |

| I'm in if the Random Mix wins this poll! Might do a genre challenge too, because Lord knows I've got a ridiculous amount of almost any genre you can think of now. |

| This whole "mother crate" thing sounds like a huge headache. It's not like we're all in the same room with a pair of decks. The genre challenge was fun, I'd like to see that again. |

The second option is where you use the entire master crate to make your mix.
The first option, you are assigned 3 tracks. I'll send them directly to you.
I don't see how that could possibly be a headache. |

| Id prefer the 5 track version, seems like more of a challenge! |

| Not too keen on the new variations, unfortunately. There's just too much of a chance that it'll become a bog standard mix with the "wildcards" tacked on simply to fulfill the requirement of the challenge, either because they don't fit at all genrewise, or because the DJ hates them. I'll take a regular genre challenge over that. |

I like the 3 random track one the most. I've never been very interested in genre mixes so i feel this would give lot more freedom to the mixer while still allowing the requester some control over the direction. I would gladly join in if this were to win.
The 50 track crate is interesting but i feel it would be rather draining to listen to all ten mixes if they contain mostly the same tracks, and beside that there is no guarantee the tracks you submitted would be used at all, kind of a bummer. |

I can understand why these new options came about, but isn't that really against the whole spirit of DJing? Isn't it about what tracks you pick?
Anyone can mix tracks, few can choose and mix good tracks together.
Limiting a DJ to 50, essentially random tracks, doesn't seem like it would be a good competition or even really fun to do. I'm not even worried about it being the same tracks over and over, just sounds boring.
Give me a genre and let me pull through my entire library. That sounds like it could be awesome. I've never passed through this subforum when one of these was going on so I havent had the opportunity to participate. |

It's sounding like there is somewhat of a split between the first option and the traditional challenge.
Please recall that this is only for the upcoming challenge, not to replace the traditional challenge entirely!!!
And to answer your question, Jon, both new options involve you picking tracks, the challenge lies in how you handle the random tracks that are assigned to you or the tracks that are in the crate for you to choose. Nobody is going to mix for you. That's why it's still in the "spirit of DJing" or whatever such nonsense that is.
So let's discuss the pros and cons of each:
3 Random Tracks
Pro's:
- You may be challenged to take your mix in 3 separate directions, or you could try to seamlessly integrate them, depending on how well you mix them with your track choices.
- You can adapt your mix style to whatever genres are presented to you.
- You may get more than one genre, so it can be more challenging
Con's:
- The tracks may be so radically different, that it's impossible to integrate them without it being obvious which tracks were assigned to you
- You may not like the tracks you are given, yet are forced to use them anyway
- Someone else has chosen 3 tracks for you, which is "against the spirit of DJing" according to jonmitz
Traditional Genre Challenge
Pro's:
- You can go in whatever direction you want with whatever genre you are assigned
- You get to experiment with the different subgenres of that particular genre
- You are choosing all the tracks on your own without any suggestions or required tracks
Con's:
- We have already done 5-6 of these challenges and the regular participants want some variety in the challenge type
- Your mix generally has to showcase one type of genre only
- People sometimes avidly hate the genre they receive, or the genre is so ridiculously obscure that people drop out
Anything else anyone would like to add? I'm just trying to be objective and choose the best challenge for everyone. Right now the traditional challenge is winning by one vote. |

| Well, my idea got well and truly shat on. I think it'd work better amongst a group of TAs who are also friends or who know each other's styles quite well, rather than as an open challenge. |

Hey, I liked your idea, and wanted to roll with it before we decided to poll the crowd.
You ers are all just too picky :p |
