| The last thing I saw was a TR-101 (DJ Pete & Sleeparchive) hybrid-DJ set. It was a pretty interesting setup - laptop + CDJs + 909 + effect boxes. A bit boring in parts but I love me some 909. |

U guys go out to nights a lot eh? Here I dont know man, its not really worth the hassle here for the most part, theres so many obstacles of s and over-inflated ego's, mirror's and bottle-rats, honestly most of the time I dont think its even worth it.
I took for granted the good times I had in the past here in Toronto, going to guvernment nightclub seeing sander, junkie, haliwell for a measly $15 dollars for the whole complex(the atmopshere was pretty good), and I usually wasted those nights being high as on something stupidly illicit. Dont get me wrong there are a ton of cool people here, but going out to a night is a bit of a chore, maybe I need to get back on those drugs. I would like to go to Mutek but thats quite a trip for me.
Honestly my favourite dj/club layout are the Boiler room tv sets, where the DJ isnt praised like some sort of demi-god, would love to be a part of that, but to get to that point here would be... magical maybe? |

I saw Andrew Weatherall play open-to-close in Manchester on Friday. Third time I've seen him since this thread started, so I won't bore you with too much fanboyish cock-sucking. Suffice to say the man is easily my favourite DJ now, and I'm learning that he tends to attract cult-ish levels of obsession. The event sold out the day it was announced, so everyone in the room was clearly a big Weatherall fan. Chatting to people in the crowd, I was struck by how everyone was more than that - every person I spoke to seemed to be an uber-fan. Some people had seen him 4 times in the last year, some had seen him 10 times. One woman I recognised from the last time I saw him (in another city) claimed to have seen him 40 times overall.
When you fill a room full of people that in love with the DJ, the atmosphere is going to be special, and it was. Soup Kitchen is a tiny club, really - no more than 10 x 10m, and although the promoter had sold it out they had clearly sold a sensible number of tickets, because there was almost always enough space to dance comfortably. The heat though - I haven't been to a club this sweaty since Oval Space last summer. There was a fog of sweat steam rising off the crowd so thick that even in such a tiny room you couldn't see the walls a few metres away.
As for the music - he started deliciously slow and the first two hours were gorgeous slo-mo grooves, building up seamlessly into acid-drenched techno. In the middle he got stripped-down and drummy, before bringing in the huge basslines for the last hour. The mixing was completely perfect, the set building flawless, and even though he was two feet away from the crowd he never once looked at any of us. In the brief moments he wasn't mixing and selecting, he was dancing eyes closed to his own set. I don't blame him. |

| Was at the Kann records party in the About Blank garden yesterday. I don't think anyone on the lineup was super well known, but regardless, a sunday garden party at that place at 24 degrees sunshine is going to draw people regardless of who's playing. Apart from one guy playing weird for two hours it was fairly nice music the whole time. I felt like the timetable was slightly off though, there was a techno liveact fairly early that would have fit better in the evening. It wasn't dark-industrial techno or anything but still not exactly sunshine music. It actually boggles my mind how many DJs are unable to play a location that isn't a dark club. I remember seeing a whole slew of local DJs playing dark drone-y in there last summer. I've you been there, you know how ing absurd that is. You're in a lush garden and the sun is shining in your face, play some music that fits god damn it! The last act were two girls who didn't even bother to beatmatch half of the transitions but it didn't really matter because they played a mix of melancholic-melodic deep house and electro/downtempo that fit perfectly in the setting evening sun. That's how you do it. They played Andy Stott - Faith in strangers, which I had to shazam. Lovely track, completely ignored that album when it came out because I was getting a bit tired of his lo-fi slugfest records. |

| Last night i went in a night club. They were playing some cool music. From 90s hit "What is Love" to today's "I Took a Pill in Ibiza". I was a nice place I loved it. |

I went to see Moderat tonight with Telefon Tel Aviv opening, at the best concert hall in mtl. Sold out show 2500 people, maybe the best live act I've seen in 10 years.
Only caught the tail end of Telefon, but they set the mood proper. I really liked their older albums, but one of em killed himself? Their new stuff hasn't been the same. Anyways, Moderat came on at 10:30 sharp with a simple minimal set up. 2 small see thru desks with gear, no laptops in sight. Dudes from Modeselektor, one playing synths live, the other jamming out on an MPC type drum machine to trigger clips, Apparat singing between them. Very dark on stage with a huge screen playing dope visual, really only saw their silhouettes most of the time.
The sound was absolutely incredible, the sub bass my goodness. They opened up with Ghost Mother off their new album. They played their stuff pretty much like off the album, but with improvised sections and bits, extended break downs. Apparat would jump on the keys, he pulled out the guitar at the end. They make some of the grooviest broken beats I've ever heard.
Crowd was amazing, really good looking group of people having a blast. Good mix of young and old, 50/50 male female. By the end when they played Bad Kingdom the place was imploding.. nice long extended version. Even their slower songs, always built up into a banging finale.
Im happy I saw them at a concert hall because I have a feeling the next time they go on tour they'll be arena tour big, and the sound sucks ass in an arena. Highly recommend checking them out, they're touring the States all summer I believe. |

| In Europe, especially Germany, they already are Arena-big. I don't think they want to go any bigger, they've said they want to retire the project for the time being. |

Im not surprised at all, took maybe 3 weeks to sell out here? They said they're going to retire the project, really? From what I read, after touring for II they went straight back into the studio to start recording III.. they normally take a break to work on their solo projects, but Modeselektor ended 50 weapons, and from what I understand they're fed up of the DJ circuit and playing at 5am.
If they do retire the project well Im really happy I got to see them, was an amazing show. |
