I didn't like the cathedral stage that much last year but I did like the 360 stage from 2 years ago with the animatronic characters.

But regardless the production there is 100% certified cutting edge, top of the chain, no expense spared. They have 5 or 6 stages that would be the main stage at any other festival, life sized interactive art installations, 30 or so full scale carnival rides, acrobats, magicians, mimes, stilt walkers...art cars driving all over the place with funktion one sound, 30 minute firework displays every night that beat the piss out of any 4th of July show ive ever seen. It's really astounding how they pull it off and the level of detail they achieve. One year I was tripping balls and a performer dressed as Goku from dragon Ball Z was break dancing near me at the Discovery stage.

Production is one thing you can't knock Insomniac on.

For productions and visuals, I appreciate artists who team up with talented visual teams (dj shadow, amon tobin, kygo, tycho, shpongle, EOTO, EXCISION, Tipper, beats antique, just to list a few that come to mind) and do amazing visual setups, whether its projection mapped or well thought out/HQ visuals.

I'm really not sure what you are so impressed about with that stage. The size? size != quality. The fire? I've been to burning man and seen real fire art. Lights and lasers are standard gear nowadays. Am I missing something? e: is it the fireworks?

I understand they are ripping off/copying tomorrowland, but I never found their setups to be impressive either. Doesn't do it for me. I get why they do it, but I'd rather the performers bring in their own productions. Having a stage crew that is able to change the production setup between acts? Now that's impressive.

Who am I kidding though, the people that mainstage EDC don't have much talent beyond ghostwriting top 40 tracks, so

While I do agree majority of the mainstage DJ's are terrible, the production its self is insane and above reproach.

That stage had moving Owls 4-5 stories high, Bellagio style water fountains, lasers, flames, circus performers, massive led screens, plus the best fireworks display you have ever seen(better than San Francisco on 4th of July)

And as BPM said above, the other stages could be a main stage at any other festival. Even the smaller "Basscon" Trance/Hardstyle stage beats anything at Ultra, Coachella, TommorrowWorld, Paradiso, etc...

It's not really a festival compared to EDC or Tomorrowworld but I prefer BPM.

Production = Very minimal
Music = Excellente!

Have some friends checking out Sonar in Spain in a few months. Should be fun.

+1. Don't get me wrong, those stages at EDC and Tomorrowland are cool but it's a very small part of the experience for me. I'm not into the music at BPM but it looks like the Luminosity Beach Festival is a similar type event but for trance and I will take Lumi over EDC. And as far as Ultra goes, I would rather stick to the clubs at WMC.

You prefer this over a totally unique and synced audio visual experience? Circus performers are interesting for a while, but I have seen live shows with unique dance groups.

EDC can't touch LIB, Coachella, or Symbiosis (not to mention east coast festivals) in which many, possibly the majority of acts, have unique productions. These people put their entire life into what they do. Instead of clowns dancing to David Guetta, then Avicii, then the next top 40 dj, and the next, and the next, they get professional dance groups, live music, unique visual experiences, and any combination thereof, that are all completely different between shows. At EDC, you get owls that bob their eyes back, and then the next show... you get owls that bob their eyes back... and... yeah

$$$$ and bigger doesnt equal better. To be fair, EDC is catering to their audience, and when their eyes are popping out of their heads from all the molly, they probably cant comprehend much beyond bigger = better and "oh i recognize this song from the radio!". The mainstage EDC puts on is boring - it doesn't matter how much money they throw at it, I will take a unique production that is 1/10th the size and has 1/10th the number of clowns/fireworks/water sprays/LED screens any day.

You can't tell me it's better than artists who put their life and soul into what they do.

Do any performers on the main stage even bring in their own productions to the mainstage at EDC or is that completely prohibited?
BPM_PHL
So you think the acrobats, stilt walker, VJs, visual artists, contortionists, sword swallowers, fire breathers and installation artists Insomniac artists hires for $$$ are different people than the people you mentioned who do it for free at burns?

From the pamphlets they hand out that go into detail about these type of people it seems like they are the same?

Pasquale has been going to BM for years now and its common knowledge that he hand picks artists he likes and offers them slots for thier art at EDC. Im confused.

acrobats, stilt walker, VJs, visual artists, contortionists, sword swallowers, fire breathers and installation artists

These are all the thing you need when the music just doesn't cut it.

Now don't get me wrong, when i first walked in a a club/festival, and saw massive production like that, it wowed me, but A) I was young, and B) it was the mid 90's.

it's 20 years later and unoriginal promoters are just cashing in on suckers.

I know EDM is young here on the west coast (well not really, just the masses finally figured it out), but nothing insomniac is doing is even slightly original. In fact when I see a firebreating stilt walker with some cyber gear on, I can't help but feel I'm somewhere for n00bs and this should have been put to rest when trance took a kicking in the 2000s'.

Sure a good spectacle and a show is fine, but a couple of huge animatronic owls or some deep sea urchin isn't enough to distract me from the crapness of the average act playing.

Less really is more in this instance, but to be honest, a bunch of people who 5 years ago would have only gone to hiphop/r&b/goth/emo clubs or concerts will lap this up and think it's what dance music is all about.

nothing could be further from the truth but Pascal has to pay for the new mansion in Hanpark somehow.

My advice. Figure out where Carl Cox is playing other than light, and that will be the one to go to (he always plays somewhere else like drais or lavo).
BPM_PHL
He'll be at Light and Daylight which are both awesome experiences when he plays there.

I don't disagree on the music which is why I'm not going back apart from the shuttle situation. There was more than enough to keep me interested last year with the good Psy, DNB, and techno/tech house but they just haven't been moving in the right direction and the outside parties are even worse.

Still stupid to knock the production though especially just the main stage when the magic always happens far from it.

I don't go to music events for lights, fireworks and pyrotechnics. It's a music event, and there's a reason that EDC even put on their flyer "It's about the experience".

It should be "it's about the music" lol.

All the visual stuff gets old the 5th time you see it= and again, my problem is that I saw it all in my teens nearly 20 years ago. They're not doing anything new, and really this sort of thing has been around since glam metal/hair rock in the 70's. Ask any of those old ers - that all started happening because the music got and they needed another way to pull the crowds in.

As for cox, look for him outside of those venues. Lavo last year. Drais the year before. Without doubt, everyone concurred they were the gigs of the whole weekend. he usually only annouces a acouple of days before and sometimes not at all on his tours dates, the venue juts puts the tix up online. Cox at Drais was one of the best nights I've ever had - I left the club at 9:30am (was in there from 1am) and there was still a line of people trying to get in. My buddy left at 11am and it was getting really messy in there.

this jesus posing, robot owl, poor soundsystem commercial bull - gimme a dark room, a great DJ and a enthused crowd and that's the formula for a great night there.

BPM_PHL
Jaded old is he^

Lavo nightclub shut their doors in 2013 you're senial dude.
BPM_PHL
PS I would say the sound in the Neon Garden could be compared in quality to Space Ibiza or Output NY the entire thing is custom otufitted by Funktion one. But theres no point arguing with you people about an event you haven't even been to.
