I think residential buildings in Brasilia are quite unlike buildings elsewhere: we cannot fence or wall the area around them, so the ground level must always be accessible to everyone — every single person, at all times. In theory, you can walk across the city in a straight line in pretty much whichever direction you choose.
The reason the information above is relevant is because when I moved onto the campus, there were 6 to 7 stray cats living near my flat's entrance alone. A whole team of residents (and randoms) looked after them, feeding them, and some even took them to the vet occasionally, ensuring they were all spayed and neutered. Due to the alarming rise in poverty during the last government, homeless people with stray dogs would often roam around the buildings.
As time went on, the stray dogs killed every single one of the cats, with two exceptions: the free-range cat my front-door neighbour adopted (Patacurta, or Shortpaw), and Tortie McTortoise. The thing with T McT is that she was a really messed up cat (she's toothless except for her fangs, for one thing) but turned out to outlive all her healthier feline companions. Everyone else said they already had a reason they could not take her, so we decided to bring her in, but not before taking her to the vet to check if she had any diseases she could transmit to our own pets.
And yet, Jesus Freaking Christ, she's docile and all, but do you have any idea how hard it is to convince a freaking outdoor cat to get the hell inside and stay put? It took us a lot of treats, food, and the occasional scratch from the cats we already had to achieve this goal, and she's used to it by now. But, we nearly gave up on the idea. We spent a good number of Fridays concocting a plan to bring her in, and now she's finally enjoying a comfortable dog-free life.
That's been a significant part of what my wife and I have been up to these days, heh.

Lira did you become a fatty over in Korea what with all the delicious street food? |
Oh God, Oh God... Praise be to the Holy Lady of Tteokbokki! I'm not exactly a food nerd or anything, but even I have to admit that the street food there is beyond awesome. Have you ever actually been there, or are you familiar with it from elswhere? My favourites are hodu-gwaja (walnut cookies) and hoppang (hot bread), and the local cafeteria had dalgona coffee, which was latte with that cookie from Squid Game in it. Turns out that's pretty much just sugar and sodium bicarbonate, so by the time I arrived at my research lab, rather than having cookie crumbles in my drink (yuck) it was just ordinary full-on sweet coffee with enough sugar to induce you into some sort of diabetic coma :p Also, I'd nearly go bankrupt whenever they set up one of these on campus because I'd take humungous amounts of simmered rice cake home and spread all things cheese over it, ruining the local cuisine but making my day:
Regarding my weight, oddly enough, I managed to shed the 15 kilos I gained during the pandemic while staying in Korea. The reason is that I would hit the gym almost every night so I could fully engage in winter sports once December arrived. Although I can only wish I had reached ziptnf's peak performance by New Year's Eve, once the first snowflake South of the DMZ fell within sight, whenever faced with the choice between sipping hot cocoa at home and cherishing the fact that I've never really broken a bone in my somewhat uneventful life, or hurtling myself headfirst down a ski slope as the whispering sound of the wind rushing past my ears drowns out my prayers that I will arrive home safe and with my knees not bending the wrong way, as if to warn me the one thing protecting me from becoming as much of a vegetable as the pine trees around the tracks in case I hit them was the one-centimetre thick helmet around my puny skull... I assure you, my friend, I always chose that snow. That's when the trouble began, that god damn snow
So yeah, in short, Korean street food is awesome, but I slimmed down :D |

I always found sychronicities to be fascinating! As in, you don't think/talk about a person (for over a decade) until they get brought up in conversation and then days later you run into them.

Anyone ever been to Bucharest?
Heading out there for a small fest in a few weeks.
Been digging for something to get into before the cold weather blows through but flights from the island are so expensive now. Still reasonable to Romania.
I've been on a massive minimal kick lately so think it could be super fun. Already found a sweet place to stay on a lake.
Anyway, a good bar, restaurant or side street tip would be appreciated :) |

Have only done it a few times, but I'm always weary of leaving wifey and kid. I've been around them 24/7 really since he was born.
That said, I'm so excited for Romania next week. I know they have a solid scene and everyone involved will serve it right. Look forward.
Weird city from the looks of it. Considering I get super drunk usually, it could be an adventure.
On this Friday? Drinking Mythos, trolling friends on text and sorting my library in case I need to play a tune at the afters :) |

Didn't make a thread about this yet but c0r always gets the deets first lol.
Earlier this week I tried to shazam a bunch of ancient unknown tracks threads and surprisingly I had success with even the tiest of audio quality! So I added some functionality to make it easier to get through the 5000 that still remain to be identified. You'll see that at the bottom of every thread (refreshes every minute)... as a bonus you also get to listen to a sample of an already ID'd tune so you broaden your musical repertoire.
I also fixed uploading of MP3s (up to 1MB) to threads in the Unknown Tracks forum
You can also listen to all the samples from within your browser by just clicking beside the thread (gone are the days of winamp .m3u/realplayer/swf for browser audio (good riddance!))
Unknown Tracks forum
Unknown Tracks - ALL tracks that need ID
Identified Tracks Archive - All tracks that have already been ID'd
...next step is to write a script to send existing mp3 samples to the shazam API and spit out a list of which are a match. I'm curious to see how many of them get detected
Tried the Shazam API - so far out of 10 entries about 3 were not found, 7 were matches but 2 of those were incorrect - the supplied mp3 file gave a different result than when I used my phone to do it. Weird that it's inconsistent... |
