What the hell??? This doesn't seem like the Israelis and the Palestinians we've grown to cherish and love. While Bush is failing in Iraq, it seems like he's making headway in the middle east.

"I would characterize the whole meeting as getting down to business with a positive approach, looking forward rather than dwelling on the past," said Sharon spokesman Ra'anan Gissin.

"We can do this together and the conditions now are promising to make further progress," a Palestinian official quoted Abbas as telling Sharon. Palestinian Information Minister Nabil Amr said Sharon and Abbas would meet again next week.

Earlier, Israeli and Palestinian military commanders met to discuss the handover in Bethlehem that Israeli Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz said would take place Wednesday.

Wednesday, U.S. officials were to announce a $30 million aid package for the Palestinians to help repair damaged roads and restore public services in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, a U.S. official said.

In another positive signal for the U.S.-backed peace plan, a poll of Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip found that an overwhelming 80 percent support an unlimited truce with Israel.

What do all of you think about the current state of Israeli/Palestinian negotiations? Personally, I think things are going rather well. Additionally, although I may be biased because I'm an American, I think the Israelis are making significant concessions in efforts to achieve peace. They are withdrawing from territories in the West Bank and the Gaza, they have ceased attacks against terrorist leaders, they have reduced the illegal settlement activity, and they have released Palestinian prisoners. Agreed, they could do more, but I think that they are taking small steps to making a genuine peace committment (even under Sharon!). I've definetely been pleasantly surprised, and I think that the Palestinians need to take a more proactive effort in assuring Israeli fears about terrorist attacks ... espically with respects to this latest incident and intelligence indicators of Palestinian intentions.
