I agree there are very talented black people and white people and many other cultures, but defining a music genre doesnt define your culture. Me being indian love the european scence and the north american scene so much, i dont hate on indian music, but i see some people on tranceaddict who do!!. |
Who hates on Indian music!? India was the birthplace of psy!! :whip: |

I like show tunes! :) No, seriously.
But just to make a comment about electronica and drugs. Unfortunately, rap also has a link to drugs. Weed, mainly. Rappers boast about how much they smoke up and how often. Pretty much every artist mentions weed in there songs. I personally think that is much worse. And don't try to tell me that weed is better then other drugs. Its not. Its all just as bad for you. At least in Electronica there are hardly any vocals about drugs and taking drugs (I do know that there are some tracks out there that do talk about drugs but these are not something that I like listening to). I find it offensive and really stupid when a rapper sings bull about how many joints they smoke a day and how many chicks they at night. Music wise, I love the beats that some rap producers make but the lyrics turn me off. Let the Phat Beats live on, but turn down the ty lyrics! |

As the Rush Comes is about drugs. But come on, the lyrics don't go like:
EMBRACE ME! SURROUND ME!!
CUZ I AM ED ON XTC!!!
DRIFT DEEPER!! FEEELIN' HIGH!!!
FLOATING TO THE SKKKKYYYY!!!
TRAVELLING SOMEWHERE!!!
TO MEET A DRUG DEALER!!!
DRAININ' SPINAL FLUID
COME ON LET'S GO DO IT!
so ATRC is pretty classy. The inspiration (from the word of Dave Dresden) was being on the dancefloor when the drugs kick in, but it obviously can be interpreted in many ways |

Hehehehe. Yeah, well I would find that not a good song at all. The last line you wrote is sooooooo beautiful. Hehehehe. The thing is with ATRC I find that the song itself is a rush. Nothing you have to do to feel the lyrics. When I first heard it I got chills and I wasn't on anything.
And yes, that's why I mentioned that some songs are about drugs but not so blantently and of course a lot of tracks don't even have words so there is nothing to worry about there |

Anyways, my final 2 cents on this topic is as follows:
Hip hop and rap promote a culture that I believe degrades society. Yes, there is stuff that contains different messages, but for the most part, it's about one of the following: weeds, bitches, carz, money, cop-killing, other crime, etc.
A large number of people have embraced the culture (and not just blacks, but EVERYBODY), and probably do listen to that "good hip hop", but still sample the crappy stuff. I don't believe that suggestive lyrics make people go out and commit crime, but most people who are in to hip hop who I talk to don't see a positive future for the world, and generally lack vision for their lives.
Trance on the other hand, sure its got all kinds of weird ties to drugs like xtc, but not everybody uses it. Trancers commit crimes just like everybody else, but I find our attitudes are far more positive. Trance is about unity. At least, that's what trance is to me. People of different culture, race and nationality can come together and feel united by music. Trance makes me feel better about myself and the world around me. How positive can u be listening to some guy "singing" about murder, weed, bitches, etc, etc...?
Musically, trance beats the hell out of hip hop. I mean come on, hip hop beats are the most simplistic and predictable rhythms and melodies on the planet.
How does one judge good music? It varies from person to person. Me? If it doesn't make me feel good about life, IT. |

why is it that you thought i was talkin about drugs....
i meant the music...and the fact that it joins all of us together in some little way. I cant personally describe the feeling but i by no means was indicating that electronica is about drugs.
this was aimed at dj smitty by the way... |
Umm??? But I never said anything about drugs...I don't do them (tried them a few times....not my cup of tea). Or were you talking about my earlier post? |

| Oh....and about ATRC being about drugs. Well, that song sucks ass anyway. It's not even trance....just some ty background beat with an annoying vocalist and annoying lyrics. I know it's all opinion, but 2003 has produced WAAAAY better tracks than ATRC. Who cares if it's about drugs....it sucks. This is why I like INSTRUMENTAL trance and electronica in general....lyrics, for me, feel just tacked on to make it more "real" if you know what I mean...it's like people need vocals in it for them to be able to listen to it. I'll use an example.....I get much more of a chill up the spine off tracks like Voyage, Viola (AVB remix), North Pole off Nyana, etc rather than tracks like Silence or ATRC or Bt - Dreaming. |

vocals can enhance a song and bring it to the next level, just like a great melody, bassline or whatever can. But, a song doesn't need a great vocal or great bassline to be great.
But oh god, ATRC... so great :D |
