Which one gets your vote ?

at the moment i believe hl2 will have a bigger gaming/modding community because of cs and other mods, as well as it will hit retail alot sooner. personal gameplay taste, i may have to lean towards doom3. seeing how most of my favorite games have come out of id software, and favorite mods have come from id's game communities.

I personally think Half-Life 2 is going to own whatever comes out this year (except Max Payne 2).

hl2 went gold already. i dont know when d3 comes out even if carmack optimized everybit of the game for nvidia. it took valve 5 times as long to optimized it for the FX and it looks worst and more very slow on their hardware. i thikn if carmak didnt optimized it for nvidia it would be out and sooner and cheaper :)

ATI > NVIDIA

HL2 hasnt gone gold yet, but valve has stated over and over that it will come out sept 30th. D3 is scheduled for late March according to activision, but if you know id software its when they are done. as for the engine, iirc carmack has said its been done for awhile now, and that there is a nv path for doom3 like there was one for quake3.

NV30 vs R300, current developments, etc

At the moment, the NV30 is slightly faster on most scenes in Doom than the
R300, but I can still find some scenes where the R300 pulls a little bit
ahead. The issue is complicated because of the different ways the cards can
choose to run the game.

The R300 can run Doom in three different modes: ARB (minimum extensions, no
specular highlights, no vertex programs), R200 (full featured, almost always
single pass interaction rendering), ARB2 (floating point fragment shaders,
minor quality improvements, always single pass).

The NV30 can run DOOM in five different modes: ARB, NV10 (full featured, five
rendering passes, no vertex programs), NV20 (full featured, two or three
rendering passes), NV30 ( full featured, single pass), and ARB2. (link)

All I care about is that I have a powerful enough system to run HL2 on the max settings :)
I built a new system few months back that consists of:

Windows XP Pro SP1
Asus A7N8X Deluxe 2 motherboard
Athlon XP 1700B @ 2.4GHz (11x220)
Corsair XMS 512MB DDR PC3200
60+40GB HD
21" Flat Screen Monitor
and other goodies :)
