rap has gone down the drain, with a few exceptions, it seems the only subject matter the new and popular artists can talk about is picking up girls, money, clubs, cars, cheesey love relationships and the such. the stuff you hear on the radio or see on MTV is an embarrasment to what hip hop should be.
good hip hop incorporates lyrics which are meaningful or are complex in their structure. use of metaphors, multi-syllable rhyming schemes and an overall good flow with the beat makes the song enjoyable and worthwile to listen to. Nas is an amazing lyricist, hes really deep and his use of metaphors is crazy. you have to listen to his words quite a few times before you understand what hes actualy trying to say
the analogy between cheese trance and mainstream hiphop is correct i think, people who listen to them don't have the patience or want to put the effort in to really listen to what a song has to offer, in trance, the use of a slow steady buildup, complex sounds and subtler melody, in hip hop, complex meaningful lyrics. most people can just be bothered to listen to simple, catchy songs.
it pisses me off, i used to be an avid hip hop fan, but the last decent album i bought was DMX : Its Dark and Hell is Hot and that was back in 99. His second album was ok, but then he fell off and then likes of Nelly and Ja Rule dominated the scene and since then everyone seems to be following that "life is one big party" trend and the result is absolute . eminem is ok, his flow and lyrics are good when hes not trying to be funny and is actually rapping about serious stuff. on the whole the rap scene is pretty now, i hate the ing oversized jersey and cap style people look like clowns and wtf is with little kids and teeny boppers rapping, i mean if what they made actually sounds good i woudnt complain but its absolute with their high pitched voices over poppy beats. its a sad day when these pop stars achieve more fame and have more influence in the genre than the artists with actual talent. |

A lot of people ask me.. stupid in questions
A lot of people think that.. what I say on records
or what I talk about on a record, that I actually do in real life
or that I believe in it
Or if I say that, I wanna kill somebody, that..
I'm actually gonna do it
or that I believe in it
Well, .. if you believe that
then I'll kill you
You know why?
Cuz I'm a
CRIMINAL
what you think trance is better? the electronic music scene is based on DRUGS. those drugs come from people who kill each other all the ing time. so, in logical terms, you support killing people since you support trance that supports drugs that supports drug dealers.
SO STFU. |

| I hate commercial rap/hip hop, but I've heard some of the more underground stuff and I can see it has feeling to it, and the production's better too... I honesty don't see how anyone can like 50 Cent, but loads of people do, so I can' t really say much when most of them have never even heard of proper trance music. |

*LONG, ALMOST PHILOSOPHICAL POST*
Damn what a bunch of haters in here. I used to love rap and hip-hop... I used to dress like rappers and hang out with wanna-be superstar thugs. I loved Tupac, good ol' Bone Thugs, Biggie, etc etc. I used to rap every Bone Thugs song by heart. That seemed to be a phase, I started to move away from all that. I stopped idolizing rappers because I began coming to the ugly realization that I had VERY little to relate to.
At the end of the day, very few people living in American suburbs and country sides and even cities can relate to most of the subjects rappers rap about. But American society sees that rapper lifestyle as being "hard" as being "cool." No they're not educated, yes most rap and hip-hop songs on the technical side are simple when compared to electronica, and yes they all seem to sing about weed, women, money, killing, having beef, etc etc. But this day and age... all those subjects are very "cool" and worthy of idolatry especially to teenagers in the US. They're seen as hard, strong, rebellious and confident. That's one of the main reasons why rap is so popular. But truthfully, it's about what type of music appeals to your ears... I really like Nelly's work and that Shake Ya Tailfeather track does make me wanna move and puts a smile on my face, regardless of being able to relate or not.
Electronica more people can relate to on many different levels since electronica is most of the time vocal-less, the listener can make up what the song means. And when there are vocals, they are very general as in everyone can put their own meaning on them i.e. As the Rush Comes, Southern Sun, etc. Technically yes, I think trance and electronica is for the majority more complex and more intricately structured... but there's no room for comparison between rap and trance when it comes to music preference of an individual, it's totally apples to oranges. But no one can relate to a song if they don't like it.
If you are going to pick out every flaw music styles have then you probably will never find any value in it. Rap is this and rap is that, electronica is nothing but drug and ecstasy music, punk rockers are suicidal, bla bla bla... as long as the music appeals to your ears, who gives a about ANYTHING ELSE! We all have our reasons for liking different things. I still listen to Michael Jackson, his music appeals to me, nuff said.
At the end of the day, the music you like is what appeals to your ears and what gets you moving, even if it's a beat made with a stick on empty upside-down laundry detergent cans. There are people that are gonna love country and western for the rest of their lives because that's what appeals to them, aesthetically they see the value and interest in that music, very few of us can can see that. Just like people that listen to country will have a hard time understanding what we TAs see as value in our music. Bottom line is that there is no room for hate... I understand people saying "rap sucks" or "country sucks" or "techno sucks" because they can't see how that music can be beautiful... but let people love the music they like, whatever it may be. Peace out kneegrow.
But if it's Dj Sammy... help those people out and give them a Tiesto record ;) |
