*LONG, ALMOST PHILOSOPHICAL POST*
Damn what a bunch of haters in here. I used to love rap and hip-hop... I used to dress like rappers and hang out with wanna-be superstar thugs. I loved Tupac, good ol' Bone Thugs, Biggie, etc etc. I used to rap every Bone Thugs song by heart. That seemed to be a phase, I started to move away from all that. I stopped idolizing rappers because I began coming to the ugly realization that I had VERY little to relate to.
At the end of the day, very few people living in American suburbs and country sides and even cities can relate to most of the subjects rappers rap about. But American society sees that rapper lifestyle as being "hard" as being "cool." No they're not educated, yes most rap and hip-hop songs on the technical side are simple when compared to electronica, and yes they all seem to sing about weed, women, money, killing, having beef, etc etc. But this day and age... all those subjects are very "cool" and worthy of idolatry especially to teenagers in the US. They're seen as hard, strong, rebellious and confident. That's one of the main reasons why rap is so popular. But truthfully, it's about what type of music appeals to your ears... I really like Nelly's work and that Shake Ya Tailfeather track does make me wanna move and puts a smile on my face, regardless of being able to relate or not.
Electronica more people can relate to on many different levels since electronica is most of the time vocal-less, the listener can make up what the song means. And when there are vocals, they are very general as in everyone can put their own meaning on them i.e. As the Rush Comes, Southern Sun, etc. Technically yes, I think trance and electronica is for the majority more complex and more intricately structured... but there's no room for comparison between rap and trance when it comes to music preference of an individual, it's totally apples to oranges. But no one can relate to a song if they don't like it.
If you are going to pick out every flaw music styles have then you probably will never find any value in it. Rap is this and rap is that, electronica is nothing but drug and ecstasy music, punk rockers are suicidal, bla bla bla... as long as the music appeals to your ears, who gives a about ANYTHING ELSE! We all have our reasons for liking different things. I still listen to Michael Jackson, his music appeals to me, nuff said.
At the end of the day, the music you like is what appeals to your ears and what gets you moving, even if it's a beat made with a stick on empty upside-down laundry detergent cans. There are people that are gonna love country and western for the rest of their lives because that's what appeals to them, aesthetically they see the value and interest in that music, very few of us can can see that. Just like people that listen to country will have a hard time understanding what we TAs see as value in our music. Bottom line is that there is no room for hate... I understand people saying "rap sucks" or "country sucks" or "techno sucks" because they can't see how that music can be beautiful... but let people love the music they like, whatever it may be. Peace out kneegrow.
But if it's Dj Sammy... help those people out and give them a Tiesto record ;) |
well said:) |

I like it when they say that trance music is "endless repetition of sounds." Heh... Listen to ANY hip-hop/rap song -- it's ing same 4/4 pattern all over.
(Yea yea I know -- rap is more about lyrics but that's even another story) |

You really are an idiot. people do no like pvd, tiesto, avb etc because they like and uses drugs, so i don't know what you are talking about. and never use the word logical again because you have none of it.
alot of these rappers are innercity pieces of gone famous for their image, that is what i was trying to say (i even gave an exmple that you left out of the quote). am i wrong? |
ok you fuking moron you've never thought about why headliners come on AFTER DRINKING HOURS ARE OVER? go to gatecrasher and tell me the trance scene isnt about drugs.

You really don't get it do you?? Trance does not sell the image of drugs to people. People don't buy trance compilations because they like drugs, people take drugs on their own accord. However, a lot of the time, raps image is drugs sex and murder and it is directly reflected in the people who make the music.

Why do you think that's what they rap about? Because that's what they had to deal with day in and day out before they made it big. Just because you grow up in a middle class family doesn't mean there aren't kids out there who have to live next to drug dealers, murderers and can't afford an education (Or education isn't the most important thing for them, survival is)
Of course this doesn't fit for everyone, but to say all rappers are uneducated pieces of makes you worse than them. For you to hate anyone for how they live their life makes you ignorant. I'm so sick of the bashing on this board, it's getting really old. If you don't like something, just deal with it instead of starting a thread to moan about something you don't UNDERSTAND. You haven't lived in their shoes, you don't know what they've been through. If people want to buy their music, more power to them for reaping the benefits.
A lot of kids can relate to what they are rapping about and I'm sure there is atleast a small percentage of kids who it gets them through the day. Would you rather they go out and spend their money on drugs instead of buying the new big CD? |

| rap to me is a bunch of bs. do people actually listen to the lyrics that are being said come on your gonna listen to a song about murdering people? rap is mostly just about the beats. i think people listen to the words but they dont actually analyze what they are rapping about because the beats sound "hot" to them. |

Hold on. Woah. I'm registered in 2001 and you're registered in 2002. By today's standards here that means I'm better than you. Newb!
I assume you want elaboration so in all seriousness, here it is. I've never seen anyone more hippocritical than some of the TA's in this thread. You guys make all these generalizations and stereotypes for rap. Well the same generalizations can be made for trance (ie. repetiveness, drug culture, DJ Sammy). The same generalizations can also be made for rock music, and even pop.
I dont know about rock, so hypothetically if I ask asomeone if theyre listening to punk rock when in fact they are listening to some other form of rock, naturally they will get pissed off. This is true in trance (DJ Sammy, Darude), and is true in rap, pop, and any other type of music.
The people here also go on and say how all the rap is the same. Again you can argue that any type of music is always the same. Trance always has a repetitive 4x4 beat with happy happy melodies; rap always has an uninspired beat and a black man rhyming about his fortunes; rock always has loud guitars and a white man screaming about life; pop always has a white woman talking about love. The point is, this is what music is! Every song sounds like any other song from its genre.
So I'm just saying, since you guys are always off thinking you're cool listening to trance and no one else knows quality trance, what about the people who are playing underground rap or underground rock? What of them?
Now I'm not gonna even argue about rap. I'll just leave it at this. |
