It's a paradox: no culture, no need to go out therefore you get fat and arteries get clogged and somehow you loose your lungs...

the way i look at it , me being a smoker, it would help me quit. because at the club is where you tend to smoke the most.

I HATE all the smoke in clubs, although I do understand the cultural concern...

I don't think the old-school raves had a lot of smoking, though. (I could be wrong, of course, I'm not an old-schooler myself, so I'm just going by what I've heard from others). At any rate, it seems to me like the culture certainly CAN exist without it. I don't think anti-smoking legislation would seriously hurt the scene - not to say it wouldn't hurt a little bit - but there are lots and lots of other places where people can't smoke, and smokers still go to them. In Kingston, all the clubs are non-smoking now, but they're still always packed.

I think smokers like to claim that the scene would die, but that response sounds very speculative, not to mention desperate and emotionally-charged. Look at the Montreal clubs where there isn't even alcohol - I'm sure a lot of lushes would say that the scene needs that, but clearly, it does not.

I for one can't wait for this legislation to pass. So many other cities have already done it and the results have been almost all positive. I'm sorry to say that I have no sympathy for smokers who are inconvenienced, because they inconvenience everyone around them with their second-hand smoke. It's fine outside, or in an open/sparse area, but in a sardine can with poor ventilation, ugh...

i'm a smoker and i like it, it's fun

but if the bylaw comes into effect, more power to it... i also love coming home not reeking of smoke (clubsmoke is horrendous)

i have partied in st cats & kitchener & burlington many times, they have no smoking laws and i'm cool with them..

and i think jacking up the cost of smokes will help people quit, not smoke-free facilities

only problem i have with it is....

this would mean you cant smoke anything in clubs

This by-law can't come soon enough.. for people with asthma or whatever lung condition its really hard to go out without problems from smoke. Imagine how much people would freak out if a restaurant/bar/club couldn't let in a handicapped person because their doors were too small or something... and toronto is usually better than most cities at putting people first, I hear of all of these other cities with the smoking by laws and start to think that Tijuana will get it before we do...

I'm all for it!!!

I suffer from asthma (But it hasn't caused me problems in over a decade), and the amount of second hand smoke you inhale at a party is insane. I ing hate it. And getting burnt by dumb people who don't watch where they dance with a cigarette... grrrrrr....

I'm completely for the anti-smoking by-law. Apparently, its going to come into effect in January 2005. I hate coming home after being at a bar/club and just reeking of smoke. Sometimes its so bad, I've got to have a shower and throw my clothes in the basement. It's disgusting.

Ari, as for the rumours abour the Martin government throwing out the by-law, they have no power over the municipal government in this regard. The only government that could impose such a restriction would be the provincial governments. As well, its not in the best interest for the federal government to enact such a restriction because the amount of money spent on health care every year for incidents related to smoking is astronomical. In some countries, they ban health care for smoking induced problems after two prior hospital admittances.
