I'm still waiting on hearing about this "Downfall" part that some of you guys are talking about. I can only think of some tracks off of "Reflections" that I didn't like. Other than that, the guy is still rocking my world and making me enjoy life.
Edit: I guess it's all just a matter of opinion. |

id say 95% of the people that think Paul Van Dyk has gotten worse, never liked him in the first place. |

| I hate how he reworks nearly all the tracks he mixes. If I were a producer I'd find it insulting. |

I can see how it some people would find it a bit tedious how he does that all the time.
However, hes simply reworking the tracks to benefit the set and audience at the time of playing. Perhaps the original or any of the remixes of specific tunes he plays dont provide the right type of energy he requires during the set. I dont really beleive theres anything wrong with it, as a mojaority of them dont see a public release.
Back to the topic, i dont think hes on a downfall at the moment. His musical style and tastes, like everyone else, evolves and hes maybe wanting to try different things.
I enjoyed his reflections album personally. Its not going to please everyone. I hear many complaining about the good old days of trance and why doesnt edm stay like it was with some particular artists... im sorry to say if all artists stayed with that particular style throughout their careers, it would eventually get very boring to listen to, and they would probably receive more flames than they do now on message boards etc. |

Have you ever seen Paul van Dyk?
I mean live, not listened to an EM/GDJB/ripped set etc. He plays with immense power and energy, the crowds love him and commands an almost fanatical following. |
For the record, I have. He's an amazing DJ.
Some people in this thread are completely missing the point, which is production quality. No one is attacking his mixing skills, and people are only dragging that strength into the discussion in desperate attempt to validate his mediocre productions as of late.
| quote: | | True, some of his own productions have been a bit of a hit and miss affair, but he cant go back to the "old sound", purely because trance has changed (i dont want to use the word "evolved") since the "good old days" of 99. |
Several people have blamed the state of trance itself for how Paul is doing right now, and to be honest, that is a bogus argument. Artists guide the sound, not the other way around. Blaming an individual lack of artistic quality on some collective lack of musical evolution in the genre as a whole has no real supporting evidence. Music is not like a coal mine which declines in output and then runs out; that's just an excuse for stagnancy on the part of each artist.

Nothing But You was in 2002 playlists and rightly beat to death by the man. Buenaventura is good, but nothing like what Paul has shown himself capable of. Edits of old tracks are fine and well, but no replacement for new innovation and work.
| quote: | | i think reflections had a few pour tracks (like a friend). If these tracks were replaced by working/autumn/other pvd tracks, the album would have been amazing. |
I agree. But they weren't replaced. Plus, Autumn and Working are older than the material on Reflections, dating from Out There and Back days.
To believe that Paul has not slacked off or declined on production, one would have to think either that Reflections compares with Out There And Back, or that a) he chose to keep superior material out of his artist album, and that b) he has excluded such material from his sets as well. Those are two rather large assumptions.

Well then I just must be in that 5%. Paul van Dyk has been among my favorite producers for years. That doesn't mean I can't criticize his work, or that such criticism somehow has no validity. |
