up t3h brightness.

open up DoomConfig.cfg in your Doom3/base folder, then find the line seta r_gamma 1... change it to

seta r_gamma 1.5

I'm pretty far in the game now... but I'm getting bored to be honest. Imps are a little overused, probably make up over 50% of the demons faced so far.... as well as the "light shutoff" scare effect :)

I upped the brightness on mine and im sorta getting used to the darknes but there have been a few parts where its so dark that i have to use my flashlight to see where the guy is, switch to a gun and since there is no light i have to use where i last saw him with the flashlight then fire, then switch back to fl to see him again.

I brought this up in another forum but you would think that 150 years in the future they would have lights built into a helmet or like a lapel light on your jacket... The guy is using a flashlight which puts out less light than my mini maglite.

i've just gotteen past those 4 big fat things in the recycling area/ to be honest there isnt much in this game but shoot to kill and the occasianal scare... i think the game was hyped up wayu too much. the only parts i like is when the whole complex seems to be possessed but that rarely happens.

dude... id game... in the end, it's a tech demo...

I must, there are a LOT of cool things built into this engine.

Been playing it since Monday.. holy mother of god. That is scary.. I already wet my pants twice.

But yah, The sounds and events are so well done.. the game is nothing revolutionary but it's really good. Plays ok on my p4 2.6ghz 512ram / ati 9600 pro. @ 1024x768 - high quality.

i got the new ati beta drivers, which makes doom 3 run better. very nice.

i had to quit because i got too scared. i'm getting close to hell, and weird things start happening (even for doom 3). its so scary. i can't take it (but i did manage to get a chainsaw finally)

Ok got my copy last afternoon and here is my take on things...

I had my system at home all prepared. It was freshly formatted with not a thing on it other than the OS and the latest drivers. My specs on that system are:

Athlon XP 3000+
512MB Ram
Nvidia Geforce FX 5900 Ultra 256MB

Now you would think it would run decently with that setup. Wrong. The freaker was choking the whole way through each new room until it loaded into memory. I had to knock down the res to 800x600 and even then it still chokes when I enter a new room. I was shocked when I exited the game to see a Windows warning in my taskbar that I normally see only on old ass systems. I had run out of virtual memory! Doom III had eaten right through my 512MB of Ram and the page file size had to be increased. I couldn't believe it.

So I thought I would try it out on a different system. I have the rare situation where my work computer is stronger than my home computer. My work system specs are:

Pentium IV 3.2 HyperThread
1GB of Ram
Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB

I brought it in this morning and installed it and it runs like perfectly even at high quality and at high res. I'm thinking the RAM is what is killing me at home. Doom III really needs 1GB to run properly. So I'm going to buy some more Ram for my
home PC and get it to 1GB and hopefully it will be enjoyable.

As for the game itself, so far from what I have played, its nice but not as blow me away as I was expecting. It is ridiculously dark but I kind of like that. We will see as I get farther once I can play it properly.

dont you get the chainsaw at the beginning of the game or near it? thats where i got mine before like half the demons appeared

I played the original 1991 doom through when it was released, as a few days ago I played the doom3 through. I'd say doom3 was a dissapointment in many ways. It was too repetitive "oh a another lab" and the gameplay was just too 1991, atmosphere was great from time to time, but mostly crap because there were monsters in almost every room, unlike for example system shock 2 which is a gem.

As a doom remake I'd give doom3 10/10, but when looking at today's standars in gaming regarding plot and overall playability doom deserves nothing but 5/10. Graphics are still great with all the shadows etc, and that's what ID is good at: making fps engines...
And if someone would say "yeah fps games are repetitive" I'd say well Serious Sam games are repetitive and still better than doom3.

Overall Doom3 is higly overhyped, hopefully this is not the case with HL2...

Doom3 ran smoothly on my machine:

1800+ Athlon XP
512MB ram
ATI radeon 9800pro 128MB
950GB Hd
Windows XP

Matt
just beat the game...

once you get to hell, the game gets hella cool.

Overall, excellent game. IMHO, single player was much better than Half Life. There is a low point about 1/3 through the game, where there is a lack of story-driven stuff and there is a lot of moving from room to room, fighting off baddies. Unfortunately, the weapons selection is a bit lacking. Actually, very lacking. Pistol, shotgun, machinegun, chaingun, chainsaw, hand grenades, rocket launcher, bfg, soul cube... it was a little unexciting.

The game's biggest high point is the graphics engine. The Doom, Quake, Quake 2, and Quake 3 engines were all advanced for their times... but Carmack has created the biggest single leap in video game graphics ever with the Doom 3 engine. You need to play the game right through to appreciate all the lighting effects. Bump mapping on textures is just unreal, as is the modelling. Even on low, the game is beautiful. There is no way HL-2 will reign in this category. The game is dark at times, but that's the point of the game. I really found myself being cautious going into room, as opposed to guns blazing (my normal style), checking corners, and THE CEILING.

Overall 4.5/5

Pros:
+ Graphics engine
+ Sound design
+ Event scripting
+ Voice acting
+ Atmosphere
+ Configurability

Negatives:
+ Lacked story-driven objectives at a few points
+ Subpar ending
+ Weaponry
BTG
you beat it already?

, i'm only... where am i? i'm only starting to get close to hell, i just did that little train type thing (a-la halflife 1 - on a rail). how far am I?
