Meh, I hate these things, but I'll give it a go:
Sasha - Xpander (Deconstruction, 1999)
Fond memories from when I dug out an old crumpled Ibiza compilation at my cousin's place. Probably the first time I truly realized what an emotional impact music can make, which is probably why it deserves no.1
Ben Sims - Manipulated (Adam Beyer Remix) (Primate, 2000)
Arguably the track that started the latin techno-wave. While this particular trend took a turn for the worse as people realized it's commercial strength, this still remains one of the most powerful techno tracks in history, and has been caned for years on end both with and without vocals. The infectious "Ta Bueno Ya"-hook combined with a bullet train bassline and ram-raiding beat programming knocked me sideways when I first heard it, and is majorly responsible for my interest in techno.
Juno Reactor - Nitrogen Pt.1 (Electric Melt, 2000)
Another dark, squelchy journey from one of the true masters of psychedelic music. One of the few tracks I've heard that manage to succesfully incorporate as many elements as possible while at the same time making it sound clean and on point.
Dom & Roland - Imagination (Moving Shadow, 2000)
Drum n bass/jungle was the first genre of EDM I was ever exposed to, and this track has made the biggest impact on me so far. The pitch-black, post-apocalyptic sound shapes that Dominic Angus has painted here pulls some of the darkest strings of my personality, and drives it home with a vocal sample that never worked better than here:
"There are times, Catarina, when I find myself transfixed by a shadow on the wall, or the splashing of water against a stone.... I stare at it, the hours pass.... The world around me drops away, replaced by worlds being created and destroyed by my imagination.... A way to focus the mind." - Star Trek Voyager: Scorpion Pt. 1
Spicelab - Falling (Harthouse, 1994)
If I have to pick just one Oliver Lieb production, this would have to be it. It encapsules pretty much every aspect of his talent that I love, be it visionary melodic qualities, razor-sharp beat precision or hypnotic, entrancing moods.
The Herbaliser feat. Latyrx - 8 Pt. Agenda (Ninja Tune, 1999)
Ollie Teeba's smoked-out dub goodness meets Bay Area heroes Latyrx, whose timing I've yet to see anyone come close to. Rapid-fire rhyme exchanges from one mic to another with such precision and speed that you'll have trouble figuring out who's spitting what line.
Nightmares On Wax - Les Nuits (Warp, 1995)
Just sublime. George Evelyn, where the hell did you get those strings from? Wherever they're from, nicking them was a pure stroke of genius. Coupled with his impeccable taste of funk and soft female vocals, this is raw beauty.
Albion - Phönix (Time Unlimited, 1997)
Michael Kores isn't the most consistant producer I've come across, but at his best he conjured up some dancefloor gems that are just out of this world. This is one of them. Relentless prowling acid that twists and mutates along with a thundering groove that never lets go. I remember being transfixed for several minutes when I first heard this on my headphones.
Demon - Heartbreaker (2000ST, 2000)
Pure urban romance. The contrasts are just piled up in this one, going from subtle female chanting to laughing studio messiness in a matter of seconds. One for those hot summer evenings in the city, when the sun flares red across the sky, skaters pull off some of their best tricks in the background, that gorgeous girl smiles at you as you pass her by, and the big, concrete city shows off all its glory.
Man With No Name - Floor Essence (Perfecto Fluoro, 1995)
I remember this from an anti-drug ad on TV when I was little. When I found out what it was a good 6 years later, I got what is probably the biggest deja-vu experience in my life to this day. The track itself shows off MWNN's polished synthwork at its most energetic, and hits all the right chords for a true stormer of a track.
I'll probably put in other tracks next time though :/ |
