Gymnastics is in progress right now so I'd say we can safely assume another medal for China and Russia by the end of that contest :p

With a couple of exceptions we really dont seem to be a competitive people. Its good and its bad. we are a nonviolent, non-agressive, tolerant and understanding people and i am very proud of that. but we do suck at sports

I personally think Geography plays the biggest factor. What sports in the summer olympics favor Canada geographically? Rowing comes to mind and not much else (and we are a definite contender in rowing). The US on the other hand can be good at almost everything (summer and winter) because it has the geography to support interest in almost every sporting event thats played.

Another big factor as to why the US does so well is college sports. Many of the US olympians received scholarship money to study at top schools while progressing their sport. This allows the athletes to get a free (and good) education and all they have to do is continue competing in something they like. Unfortunately I'm forced to watch NBC's coverage but I can't describe the number of US athletes that attend schools like Brown, Stanford or Berkeley... its kind sickening actually.

That's not really true anymore because a lot of the athletes practice in the US, including our Canadian athletes who get scholarships in the US...so geography really isn't much of a factor i think :) but for some it's true :D
