......also, non smokers dont understand, they cry, bitch and moan about their health, how bout that car u drive everyday, i dont drive a car but the fumes from ur auto are making me sick, does that mean we should ban cars from the roads? how bout those powerlines that cause leukemia? how bout industry polluting our water and soil?? the thing is u non smokers agree with these laws when the govt is screwing smokers by raising taxes and telling them its for their own good when theyre raking in big time profits from our addiction. so all of you and im gonna light up in the club because its my democratic right to, last time i checked we lived in a democracy but ontario has more rules than communist china.

you know all new cars and most cars fromthe last 10 years pollute less then whats in your cigarette. now if the hasnt been maintained then it can be bad, yes.
and for the most part they are tying to recitfy the other problems you layed out even though they are way different.

we understnad just fine . (has a family of smokers/former smokers) which probably most do.

Graham just quit man. If you are already smoking so little, what's the point of smoking at all.

Or light up, but you are going to be getting rid of a lot of friends if you do that in a club.

I think the key part here is "all of Ontario".

I worked in the 1000 islands this summer in Rockport, which is inbetween Toronto and Ottawa. Thousands of tourists start at montreal, then go to Ottawa, then Kingston, then Toronto, or the other way around. They stop at the little places inbetween also. My entire summer evolved around tourists, but thats another story, lol.

Half of the places along the 401 are non-somking, half are smoking. That is very confusing!! If one place in Ontario is non-smoking, all places should be.

So Im gone for a day and already everybody is calling my name LOL

Anyways here goes:

Let me just start by saying that i support the goal of this law 100%. I am a non-smoker and I think smoking is disgusting. I also hope that one day we will have a smoke free society. Unfortunately it is the way we are going about trying to achieve this goal that is very wrong and unjust.

I must say that I am all for banning smoking in MOST public places. Where I draw the line is non-essential entertainment facilities where there are no children present. As you know, I feel adults should be able to makea choice and not have the government do it for them. Having said that, this smoking law that is currently in effect, with a few exceptions, seems to make everyone happy. The non smokers dont have to breathe the smoke and the smokers still have a place to smoke. But now this.

The logic behind this is very clear. It's not designed to protect non smokers from second hand smoke as the current law does that just fine. This law is clearly behavioural modification oriented to try and make it as inconvenient as possible for smokers. The idea is to make it so difficult that people will be forced to quit. This is big brother at it's worst folks.

Why ban smoking rooms? Nobody goes there unless they smoke so they are protected. Business owners have spent 10's of thousands of dollars on air exchage systems and renovations for these rooms and now they are about to get screwed. The government should be held liable for this.

I knew this day was coming even back when they announced the June 1 law that is currently in effect. Why? Because these "activists" never stop. Do you honestly think this is the last restriction they will ever put on tobacco? No way! Look for the banning of smoking in your car, on the street, on open patios, at the beach. That will be the next cause im sure. And this is essentially why i am against this type of legislation.

It's one thing to try and protect non smokers but this goes way beyond that. This is clear government nannyism and this sets a whole bunch of new dangerous precedents . Im especially concerned with banning smoking in private clubs. They have essentially set the stage for banning smoking in your own home and your own car as clearly they have the right to control your actions on private property. Don't think that is possible? Well remember that this legislation is designed with behaviour control in mind and NOT the protection of non-smokers.

My question is whats next? What else will the government decide is bad for us and ban in the name of protecting us from ourselves? I already hear they are trying to ban fatty foods. Whatever happened to allowing adults to choose their own fate? It's the big picture folks. This goes far beyond smoking. This is about how far the government can go to control an adult citizen's behaviour and how much the general public will tolerate of it.

I will end by also by adding a message to all those who voted liberal and are against banning smoking rooms. Next time do your research a little more carefully. This was outlined in the Liberal platform and is actually one of few promises they are actually keeping. I think if any thing this illustrates why i think its so important for everyone to be politically informed because the person who is in power affects EVERYONE'S lives.

For all those against this undemocratic legislation there is a protest site called www.mychoice.ca . I've already signed up.

This is indeed scary stuff, and i'm not talking about the prospect of mass groups of smokers huddling togather for warmth because they are forced to smoke outside during the winter. I'm more afraid of just how much involvement this Government feels it should have in the choices and actions it's citizens have.

The bylaw made sense, i'm a smoker, and i don't want someone else to suffer because of my habit. But banning smoking rooms, outdoor smoking patio's ? That's just ridiculous. Not only is it a financial drain on businesses that have already spent reasources on contrusting these monstrous environments but it's an even bigger slap in the faces of all smokers. Like buying a pack for $7.50 wasn't enough, now we have these fcukers and the smoking-kills brigade telling you that the only place you can puff away at your beloved cancer stick is the great winter outdoors. Where with the wind chill it's -40 ladies and gentlemen...so make sure you bundle up before you light up, you don't want your eyelashes breaking off.

I look around, and already there are plenty of smokers who are defiant about this new rule -- and brazenly light up in areas designated non smoking. Now that in itself wouldn't be enough, but they have a silent partner to bolster any confidence that the anti-smoking bridage might seek to break. The businesses themselves. Although many of them have adopted the hardline, quite a few establishments i've recently been to just don't give a fcuk. They are aware a significant number of their patrons smoke, that this has been the status quo for years, and they aren't going to lose anymore money because the governments pandering to the anti-smoking activists.

Big Tabacco was scoped and targetted a few years ago when the first billion dollar lawsuits were filed by ex-smokers, the once invisible Goliath took a big hit. Now spurred on by 'progressive thinking', the goverments going to land the killing blow by banning smoking outright in public places...soon, we'll see it creep into some selected private spaces too. Afterall, parents can't be trusted to keep their kids safe when they drive em to school, so lets just be on the safe side and ban it in cars as well. Gotta protect the kids from the big bad smoke -- well just untill TV and advertising gets them, and rots their brain.

Maybe it's because i've lived in countries where such a law would be laughed at -- or simply ignored completely. But the level of involvement in peoples live by this government points to dangerous times ahead. The fact people don't realize it, and think it's been done for thier own good reveals the sheep mentality which is prevalent in society today.

This is my point exactly. We let the government get away with this stuff and they keep trying more and more. This is why we have to make sure this stops NOW. Countries that now have freedom but know what it's like not to have freedom would never let the government take away their rights like this. This is a bigger issue than smoking and it always has been for me. Its about how much the government can control how you live.

Wake up Canada, we are becoming a dictatorship. (and no im not exaggerating)

Most are "letting " get away with this one because most want to see it gone!
