Why does the rest of Canada hate Toronto? (pg. 7)

Basically, Toronto wants to be considered a world class city.
The fashion district, Paris or Milan wannabe.
Bay street, Wall street (New York)wannabe.
Have you ever heard of the TSX composite mentioned along side with the major financial indexes on CNBC or any other global business report ?
CBC TV, BBC or CNN wannabe.
Torontorians are more polite but are definitely more fake than the Americans. Here is a good example,
A friend of mine used to work for a call center conducting surveys, when he used to call the US, they would just hung up on him, but the Canadians used to tell him that they are kind of busy and when he replied "when it will be better to call back", their answer was "You no what, I'm not interested".
Even amongst the hundreds of DJ's currently based in Toronto or in Canada not even one is behind a multi-million selling dance project.
Come to think of it, what makes Mark Oliver so special, has he formed a dance/trance project that entered the British or the European charts ?
Try mentioning his name on any German, Dutch or Italian music board and see how many will recognize him. |
Production has ABSOLUTELY nothing to do with how well you can DJ. I wish people would realize this. |

what do you mean, Toronto is not big at all? the GTA is HUUUUUGE! Not to mention Mississauga, Bramton and the other outlying areas....
|
Toronto is NOT big. Sure in North America its a big city but go to LA, New York, Europe, Asia, South America, just about anywhere and you will see what a big city is.

Try to get to Downtown TO from Mississauga or something in 10 min!
|
actually missisauga to Toronto can be done in 10 minutes depending on where you are and where you are going in both places
| quote: | | Another thing I personally dont like about TO is that it feels so American....all the same stores, same corporate feel, advertising, fast food places....its so much like the US, makes me wanna vomit.:nervous: | the only difference between our corperate feel and yours is that yours is in French. You still have enough "poulet frit kentucky" to kill a small child out there. Dont tell me that Montreal isnt as North American as the rest.
| quote: | | My g/f is 23, has no accidents and has a 1990 Honda Civic which is worth like $2K. Insurance wants $4000 (yes, four THOUSAND) a year for coverage! $4K for a 15 year old Honda?! She'd pay literally $500 in Montreal. |
insurance costs more here but i wonder how accurate your figures are. The only people i can think of here that would pay that kind of insurance on such an old car are very high risk drivers.
| quote: | | Same with housing...although I'm not quite an expert on housing costs in TO, I just know that a condo similar to mine would be about double the price in/near TO. |
Agreed. Housing is retardedly overpriced here. That is an advantage montreal has for sure!
| quote: | | And the TTC charges up the ass for a montly pass! $98? Its $62 here! |
Thats because according to you we have much more territory to cover with that pass. But yes the TTC needs to smarten up with its routing and schedules. I suspect that montreal is no different when it comes to the suburbs though. |

Ummm...CBC has nothing to do with Toronto. Other than being based in T.O, they cover news from all of Canada. They're not "wannabies" because frankly, CBC has a very good reputation and much more credible than CNN (not that CNN is bad, per se). How you managed to complain about it is beyond me.
And Toronto isn't that big...Jayx1 is right, there's much bigger cities around the world, so I don't know why Canadians use that as an argument. They really need to get in touch with the rest of the world...
And Alex, mention Luke Fair or Max Graham in Europe and you'll get some responses. The fact that Mark Oliver isn't popular over there is because he's devoted to the scene here, which is why he's called a LOCAL. |

Mark has stayed in Toronto by choice. I know for a fact that he gots a lot of offers to play overseas but he is committed to his residency because he feels that it's the most important thing he can do.
DJing is about being dedicated to what you do and loving what you do and loving the music. Not trying to be #1 on some popularity chart at all costs. |

thats what I've been trying to tell her! No way insurance can be THAT high. But theres no hidden story..shes 23, first car, its a 1990 Honda...she never had any accidents or tickets..so $4K strikes me as pretty odd.
Other than her, I've spoken to many of my relatives in and around TO (Markham, Whitby) and they all tell me (these are people in their 30's and 40's, married, with kids, with Toyota Carollas and such) that insurance is still pretty expensive $3-4K
:nervous:
Makes me wonder how you guys can afford cars! Or maybe everyone I know doesnt know how to shop for insurance! :stongue:
Oh, and I guess Toronto is not *that* big, compared to other cities like LA, NYC etc....but we are talking about Canada here, arent we? So compared to Montreal, Vancouver and the like, TO is friggin HUGE! |
im 29. Have a brand new car and pay 1600 a year. |

It scares me how so many Torontonians actually think TO is the best city in the world.  Do some traveling! |
I concur :p |

well jay, perhaps it is...but since I grew up in New York and came to live here after...it's hard to agree. U know there's no place like home if your from another country.
neways...I was actually comparing TO to other continants.
and truth be told when I was in Ottawa recently I so desperately wanted to stay and live there (the ppl are soooo friendly)...even tho there is absolutely 0 club life there. |

| Well thats my complaint about Toronto. The way people act. But the city itself is great even if transit does suck |
|
|
| Euphorica |
my g/f is 21 and pays 3k for a 2000 civic...her first car..in her name etc. so something is up with that 90 civic thing.
You know what I find. its not even so much the white white canadians that have attitude probs..its the people from other countries(not to sound racist cause im not) but its true. Quebecers are worse imo..not necessarly those from Montreal though. |

ITs fine and well that we are comparing TO to NYC, or even Europe, but the fact remains, that Canadian were comparing it OTHER CANADIAN cities, not US....
So then it is a big city(largest in canada), it is densly populated, and it is dirty, and has a high crime rate. Its all relative people.
but if you wanna compare it to other large cities, worldwide, then none of these points hold up.
but like i said, i thought the comparison was done by canadians?
And Jayx1, it is very seldom that it takes 10min from TO to Sauga. I GOTrain it every morning, and even that takes 35min(yes there are stops), the express is 17min from Clarkson GO Station on the South-West side of the city. So thats one reason the transit isnt great...very large distances. |
