What are you? Living in denial, naive, or just plain stupid? ;)

Its a proven fact, and her looks will have (unconciously) swayed the perception of guilt of many people

I wouldn't say shes minging, but I don't reckon she's worth a second look either.

it's a proven fact people decide whether someone lives and dies based on how good looking they are?

i say no, as the idiots who tried to prove that would've all been ugly and thus would be dead by now

PERCEPTION OF GUILT.

PERCEPTION OF GUILT.

PERCEPTION OF GUILT.

PERCEPTION OF GUILT.

PERCEPTION OF GUILT.

PERCEPTION OF GUILT.

PERCEPTION OF GUILT.

the public PERCEPTION OF GUILT will have been affected by the fact shes young and (admittedly not hot imo) but got some looks

Piss off then,

chew me. dont tell me that you think a nation where people decide their opinion on a situation becoz of a 60 minutes expose, where the public got to vote is an example of rational thinking- where the most popular current affairs shows are things like aCA & 60 mins.
i dont believe the everyday australian is going to have put a lot of thought into why they feel the way they do. which is pretty much what youre agreeing on with rez n renegade ;)

btw, if the exact situation was reversed, an Indonesian caught smuggling 4.1kg of marijuana into Australia, all those complaining would probably be saying they should be locked away for a long time......

not here mate. if we had similar prison systems and the death penalty here for crimes like this, then id feel exactly the same way for them. dont assume that i care that she's australian; this is just one case ive (obviously) noticed.

in being guilty of possessing drugs with an intent to sell is a crime punishable by death, your found guilty you die

Here's my take on the whole thing:

I have no problems going to Indonesia again, and i loved it when i went.

I find it difficult to empathise with people who are saying that they are going to boycott an entire country because of the outcome of ONE CASE involving one single person. It seems ridiculous to me.

Indonesia is a sovereign nation with its own legal system. Yes, their legal system is different to our legal system and it may seem "unfair" to many, but who are we to pass judgement on another country's affairs? Countries all over the world have their own set of laws that people must abide by. We may disagree with those laws, and we can argue until the cows come home, but ultimately, those laws are still in place.

The good old USA is supposed to be a pillar of freedom, the shining light of democracy throughout the world. However, i can think of many examples of injustices commited by the USA that would warrant a "boycott" The rendition of "unlawful combatants", the treatment of prisoners at Guantanemo Bay and the defiance of the Geneva Convention are a good start. What about those disgraceful laws passed by the government like the RAVE act?! And what about the Freedom bill recently passed, which imposes many restrictions on personal freedoms and the rights of US citizens ???? BOYCOTT!!!!! I DECLARE A BOYCOTT!!!!!!! NEVER AGAIN!!!!!!!!

By the same logic, should foreigners boycott Australia because of:

  • Our disgusting treatment of Australia's indigenous population
  • Destruction of the environment for short-term gains, and our refusal to sign the Kyoto protocol. The Australian government seems to be ignoring the huge global issue of global warming at the moment
  • Our treatment of asylum seekers (including women and children).
  • etc etc

Well?

I'm too tired to articulate my thoughts appropriately, but I did say the PUBLIC perception of guilt.
I agree with what you have said, but the PUBLIC perception of guilt (that includes the media) will have been affected. Without a doubt. Hence the outcry.

pkc - I reckon I may have misunderstood you, cos I do actually agree with your thoughts on ACA etc, what you have said etc
Misunderstanding.....

im already arguing about this in the political forums ;) but the short answer is yes, i think there are times when we should (like when we send troops to help with tidal waves or independence, peace keeping etc). and countries all around the world are meant to abide by UN laws as well dont forget. just coz youre a sovereign nation doesn't necessarily mean you have a free reign in what occurs in your country. (unless youre a nation that has a stick) ;)

all im saying is the sentence is way too harsh (i honestly dont care about the argument about different cultures and their non-relative, isolated natures) and our govt should help any of its citizens *at least* serve out their sentences in a homeland gaol. and i dont see any benefit for the indonesians to make her stay there. as we can plainly see, no matter the laws, people continue to do it. people are stupid. im trying to protect people, people :p

**i have brought peace and justice to my empire** :)
