| this is the kinda reason why i would choose holidaying locally over going to one of these countries with strict rules on things like this.. anyone seen that movie about the two us girls who got life in prison for a similar setup? sad really. |

It's just served to remind me what a bunch of gutless turds our government is. Hope i never need their help. I bet if it was one of John Howards children things would be a little different.
There is no way those drugs were her's. And who has to step in to help here, some mobile phone mogul.

She's not guilty... but she will probably still stay in the slammer for it. They won't apply the death penalty since the Australian government is (sort of) involved.
Hearing of evidence is now finished, now it's just a bit of a wait until the verdict. |

I think she's innocent, and I do hope that she will be found not guilty. Surely she should have known that carrying drugs through SE Asia results in the death penalty. no one can be that stupid (I hope). How did the maryjane get in her bag anyway? What happened to, y'know, locks on luggage?
Unfortunately, the Indonesian justice system leaves a lot to be desired...of course the Aust govt should be trying their best to ensure she has top legal representation, that evidence isn't tampered with (though it may be too late for that) etc. However, if the govt has explored all existing avenues, raised all mitigating factors etc, and she is still found guilty, that's it! The Aust govt has no right to intervene with the laws of another country, regardless of their unfair or unjust qualities. It's not in their jurisdiction. although she is an aust citizen, by travelling to Indonesia she made the choice to operate under their legal system. By no means should she give up her fight...but this is something she, and all of us, should be conscious of. |

locks on luggage isn't worth doing much anymore. Not sure about all countries, but US customers state that they'll use any method necessary to rip open your bag if it's locked, and being locked is immediately going to make them suspicious.
baggage handlers have plenty of opportunity to mess with bags going anywhere.
I can't think she's guilty, it was too poorly done, and the gains from such a venture would be bugger all. |

couldnt disagree more. i think its the job of all advanced liberal democracies to put pressure on government's that institute antiquated laws or any legal framework that is simply inequitable. all laws should be subject to reason. just becoz something is enshrined in law in a particular country should not a priori exclude it from pressure from other govts. thats like saying germany could've made any laws against the jews and theres nothing we should have done about it, and we should respect their ideals.
as renegade said, our govt should be putting as much pressure as possible on the indonesian govt. |

I was a little disappointed to hear that another million dollars worth of aid has been supplied to the region in the wake of the devastating earthquake there. It sticks in my throat a bit that they have recieved many millions of dollars worth of aid from both government and non-government organisations, yet continue to treat one of our citizens as they are. I'm not at all saying that Australias aid contribution should be stopped, but it makes you think.......
And yeah, she's totally innocent imho. |

after talking to some of her friends - they said she had nothing to do with drugs in general, always said no. [though friends will be friends...]
another thing no-one has raised: who would want to take bud into indo? seems like a pointless exercise... theres certainly no shortage of it over there..
i'd understand they were trying to smuggle it back out into australia.
I'm undecided whether she is in fact guilty or not, however no matter what the outcome the death penalty should definately not be considered.
[and as for crazy ron (now mad ron?) taking a team of lawyers over there... publicity stunts 101..]

Countries like the US and Australia still do intervene in some cases - cant think of any examples off the top of my head though. |

we can't expect them to treat our citizens differently under the same law, its like saying a yank robs a bottlo but we should let him go because US is our major trading partner.. |
