as much as I fear the thought of Quebec seperating from confederation I have to respect the Bloc for their representation of Quebec. If they would give up their nationalistic goals I would be a big fan of the Bloc. That being said, I do thing they do a lot to increase the regional cleavage in this country. |

For all you NDP-bashers...
Truthfully, the NDP is not the party of the poor. They support unions and increased government regulations of corporations, which are designed to reduce corporate externalities (ie get rid of a corporation's ability to make others pay for its problems). Even if these policies appear like they'd hurt the economy, they'd eventually force businesses to be more conscious of the effects of their actions and increase efficiency. Do you think something like Jetsgo would have happened under an NDP government? Never.
Also, the NDP only wants to reduce taxs cuts for the extremely wealthy. They instead want to put that money into social programs, healthcare, etc. IMO, that's better use of the money. |

Maybe you should read the articles you post. There was never an alliance as you allege - far from it. If you examined the rolls of any party you'd find quacks. If you had any credibility, you'd have mentioned Trudeau's Nazi-sympathetic past, Ernst Zundel's 1968 run for leadership of the Liberal Party, the support of eugenics by members of the NDP, etc. etc.
I find it suspicious that you'd discuss the topic several times in an anthropology class. What sort of indoctrination were you receiveing? |

There are 130 constitutional lawyers that claim the nothwithstanding clause is required to do what Harper wants. Where are the constitutional experts supporting Harper saying he can just say "marriage is traditional" and all will be fine in Charter-land? There aren't any! (Or if their are, not nearly the number that say the opposite). Whether you agree with the principles of the Charter or not, the fact is it is now part of our constitution... and if you want to play politics, you have to play by the rules.
The group in question has differing opinions as to whether same-sex marriage should be allowed or not. That opinion is separate from their LEGAL and PROFESSIONAL opinion about whether the notwithstanding clause is required to overturn a decision of a court with regard to a charter right.
...and the fact that your figures regarding donations come from a period of 7+ years does not mean they have a deep and longstanding relationship to the parties. In some cases, they may have donated one time, 7 years ago. That certainly doesn't prove the point you're trying to make. |
BREAKING STORY:
From Andrew Coyne of the National Post
http://andrewcoyne.com/2005/04/will...ppointments.php
"The same [Lieberal] network controlled the appointment of judges. During the 2000 elections, the party had a stable of about 20 big-time Montreal lawyers working for them for free. Or perhaps, not quite for free: Several of them were subsequently rewarded with judicial appointments. The same practice applied, he says, with regard to accountants and engineers -- and, of course, advertising agencies -- all of them "volunteering" their services to the party in hopes of winning contracts.
This goes way beyond sponsorships, in other words. But you knew that."
What we have here is the Lieberal government appointing judges based on their party connection, and not on merit. The 130 partisan quacks you mentioned earlier are just looking for judicial appointments.
This also calls into question the POLITICAL decisions in provincial courts regarding same-sex marriage. In other words, those judges weren't making legal decisions, they were enacting Lieberal party policy from the bench.
The Lieberal Party is a modern day version of the Family Compact. It's a party based completly on patronage and corruption.
What we need is reform of the judicial appointment process, as well as constitutional change to restore power to Parliament and away from unelected judges. The Lieberal Party also should be deregistered by Elections Canada, and refounded from the bottom up by principled liberals.
In the meantime, we need to do our part as citizens by VOTING THE LIEBERALS OUT!! |

I still can't vote for a religious, redneck Albertan, no matter how corrupt the Liberals are. I've never liked Paul Martin either and the NDP are a joke, at least federally. So yeah...i'm screwed. Longtime Liberal voter who has nobody to vote for anymore. I guess I'll just X my ballot.
Besides, this kind of corruption has gone on since Canadian politics began. Look up John A. Macdonald and the CPR scandal from the 1870's and on through all the PM's, Liberal and Conservative, and you'll dig up some dirt. I just don't understand why people are all of a sudden so surprised and angry. There's some serious naivetee in this country. |

^^^ exactly.
The Liberals got caught, while other administrations did not.
anyone who thinks this type of isn't THE NORM is so out of touch with reality, lol. Hearing Jack Layton say that he's "outraged" makes me laugh. you...you'd do the same greasing of palms if you get into power, as would Harper, as did every PM before, as will every PM going forward.
again, that doesn't make it "ok"...but let's at least stop pretending this is an isolated case of gov't corruption
Harper is such a turd...hearing him complain about the Liberals stifling the opposition by cancelling/rescheduling the 'opposition days' is LAUGHABLE. He got BURNED and is embarassed and upset, nothing more.
He would have attempted to schedule one 'opposition day' PER WEEK for the rest of the current session. Why? To be a responsible opposition critic? bwwwwahahahahahahahaha, yeah right!!! Knowing an election will likely come sooner rather than later, he would have used those days to use Parliament as his own personal election platform. Martin nipped that little plan in the bud and now Harper spins it into "stifling democracy" |

I guess you prefer dictatorships... no pesky opposition to stand in the way. I think you should read up on the Upper Canada Rebellion and the struggle for Responsible Government in Canada. It seems that we've actually REGRESSED since then.
The NDP has never taken kickbacks or gotten friendly judges appointed.
Also, what happened in 1993? The PC Party was decimated. It has since been reformed and refounded.
The Lieberal Party also needs to go through the same process. If you don't, Harper will be Prime Minister for a decade! The best advice I can give to real liberals is to have a new, clean Liberal Party.
If you think this is "business as usual" then you're the one that's naiive. AdScam and JudgeScam are the biggest corruption scandels in history, and are far worse than Watergate was in the U.S. |

I prefer opposition parties who recognize that their job is to keep the gov't in check WHILE WORKING TOGETHER for the best interests of the country...not to disagree on EVERY issue for the sole purpose of furthering their own political agenda (i.e. to take power).
At least Layton is open to working with Martin if he changes his stance on a COUPLE of issues. If you listen to that flip flopping idiot Harper, NOTHING the Liberals do is "right" or "ok", which just tells me that Harper's primary goal is simply to take power by disagreeing with everything the current adminstration does. While the intention of forming the gov't is to be expected of the opposition, it should not be their *main* focus (as it appears to be in this case).
For the sake of this country, I hope Martin and Layton learn to work together...regardless of who wins the next election. There's no way in hell the Conservatives (if they even win) will get a majority...so Martin and Layton will be working together...whether it's to prop up the current Liberal minority, or to combat the idiocy that will follow if the Conservatives form a minority gov't. |

I will still vote Liberal as well....
People forget that the Conservs had the same type scandalous insider shananigans during the 8 years of Mulroney governing. It is not right but this happens on every level of government (municipal/provincial/federal) within our corporations from clerk to president.
There is corrupt powers at work everywhere - and the fact that we are wasting out time and energies fighting and arresting potsmokers and prosecuting petty crimes instead of going after WHITECOLLAR crime is maddening to say the least......
Look at ENRON (and the massive cover-up that ensued)Worldcom, Conrad Black, Martha Stewart, Sponsorship scandal....etc - this CULT OF CORPORATE bull mentallity - profit profit profit - bottom line and blah blah blah - will be the end of us ----- integrity means ----- the amount you can use, abuse, who you can -over or get away with is insane and disgusting. Subsconsciously we must know we are doomed for we just keep on ing it up and taking it - trying to emerge the one with the least amount of on our face at the end of the day and calling ourselves pious and human....WTF!
I am a strong believer in the classic LIBERAL agenda - CHANGE and open thought. Perhaps this government under this PM is ineffectual but I do believe the proposed mandate that this Liberal government set out with its budget recommendations is important to all Canadians.
In June if we do go to the polls (I hope not) are only other choice (because of the voting split) will put a mirror face to our neighbours down south. That is almost as scary and horrifying.
I will take a 200 million dollar sponsorship scandal over an agendist "so called" moral Conservsative "just as shady" government anyday. Long term effects of a conservative Government under Harper in power for 4 years will make this "sponsorship scandal" look like pocketchange.
The things that have been accomplished under the LIBERAL government in the last 10 years have been amazing. HUMAN RIGHTS/IMMIGRATION/LACK OF RECESSION/ACCESS TO PROGRAMS.
No government is perfect. And Martin is wearing the egg that Cretien left on his face from a year and a half ago.
Cretien might have been a bit of a prick but he didn't take and helped keep this country together.
Martin and his "father fulfillment" dream is sadly being wasted by a man who should have never been PM.
Although it may be too late - Martin is right that we the people should know the facts before we go to another election.
Until there is a major overhaul in our public conscious and accountability - again we will find ourselves making the choice between the lesser of evils.
