Damage Done

Damning testimony that came out last week in the sponsorship inquiry has critically crumbled Liberal support across the country, especially in Ontario.

Only 25 per cent of respondents in last week’s national poll by EKOS Research said they would vote for the Grits if an election were held today. That’s about a 12-point drop from where they were at election time last year.

Where did those points go? Mainly to the Conservatives. The Stephen Harper-led party was backed by 36.2 per cent, a gain of about 10 points over a similar survey taken in February.

The poll followed damaging testimony by former Groupaction ad exec Jean Brault at the inquiry into the federal government’s sponsorship scandal. Brault’s allegations of shady meetings and taxpayer money being funneled into Liberal party coffers in Quebec infuriated voters, and could result in a spring election.

The national poll results gave the NDP 20.5 per cent of the vote while the Green Party ekes out five per cent. The Bloc rules locally in Quebec, virutally wiping out hte Liberals.

In Ontario, the Conservatives were backed by 40 per cent of respondents, with the Liberals at 33 - a significant drop in the former Liberal stronghold province.

The Grits eked out their win last fall by taking 74 of Ontario's 106 seats. Without that support, they'd lose the country.

Opposition parties have been polling the electorate to see if an election is what the public wants. And it seems that despite the brutal allegations, Canadians don’t want to head back to the polls ... yet.

Sixty-two per cent of those asked said an election shouldn't take place until the presiding judge in the inquiry, Justice John Gomery, issues his report later this year after testimony wraps up in May.

Other events that would delay the federal decision include a B.C. provincial election May 17 and a visit by the Queen later that month.

Best guess? If the Conservatives plan to strike while the ire is hot, they could try and force a non-confidence vote in time for a late June election.

Traditionally, summer votes have amongst the lowest turnouts. But public anger could change that - along with the leadership make-up in the House of Commons.

Not much at all, trust me.

Let's start our own political party.

First we'll need a suitable name.

No, we won't use Manfest.

The difference is that before Canadians were completely oblivious to Lieberal corruption. TOday they're just semi-oblivious.

the difference is that there is now solid proof that the liberals stole money and used to it finance their campaigns which in effect curtailed the basic fundementals of democracy by buying the election. Not to mention that it came out that chretien's brother was involved as well. Id say thats a pretty good smoking gun.

me! :p

note that 62% do NOT want an election called until the inquiry has been complete...Harper will no doubt be watching that figure.

let's not forget that some polls, acc. to Harper, pointed toward a Conservative majority shortly before the last election and they proved to be QUITE wrong.

polling people RIGHT after damning info is made public will result in people being angry and voting out of feeling.

I personally wouldn't put THAT much stock in these polls...by the time an election is called, people will have settled down and will consider their vote more carefully.

I don't think this is the end of the Liberal gov't...not by a longshot. Proof is that Harper isn't immediately making moves to bring down the minority gov't and trigger an election.
